Will Mason Greenwood play for Manchester United again in the upcoming season?

With several Manchester United players returning to first-team training this week, the future of attacker Mason Greenwood has once again become a topic of discussion.

Greenwood was seen at United's Carrington training ground on Monday with his father however did not take part in the training. This marks his first appearance at the training ground since January 2022.

Greenwood, once regarded as one of United's brightest young talents, now faces an uncertain future with the Premier League giants. Having joined the Manchester United setup in 2007, Greenwood's career trajectory took a dramatic turn.

In January 2022, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assaulting his girlfriend, Harriet Robson. He was held in custody as legal proceedings commenced.

However, in February 2023, the police announced that Greenwood would no longer face criminal charges, and the Crown Prosecution Service dismissed the case. In a surprising twist, Greenwood subsequently married Robson.

United had initially planned to reintegrate Greenwood into the first-team squad at the start of the last season following the dismissal of his case.

However, concerns about a potential public backlash led the club to abandon this plan. Instead, the club kept Greenwood suspended and conducted an internal investigation.

Former chief executive Richard Arnold ultimately determined that Greenwood should not play for the club again. Consequently, Greenwood was loaned to Getafe last season, where he performed well.

With ongoing issues on the right-hand side of their attack, some United fans hoped that Greenwood might be reintegrated into the squad following the departure of Richard Arnold. Speculation intensified when Greenwood was spotted just before United's pre-season training camp.

However, it is now understood that the new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, along with directors Sir Dave Brailsford and Jean-Claude Blanc, and sporting director Dan Ashworth, all share the same opinion that Greenwood should move on.

Greenwood remains under contract at United but is not expected to participate in pre-season training as discussions continue about finding him a new club.

Italian side Lazio has expressed interest in signing Greenwood, but sources indicate that French club Marseille are the most advanced in terms of concluding a deal. United are reportedly seeking a transfer fee between £30 million and £35 million for Greenwood.
