Florian Wirtz Shines As Germany Beat Switzerland With Six Goal Involvements In Two Games

Florian Wirtz produced a standout Germany display in the 4-3 friendly win over Switzerland, scoring twice and providing two assists. His six goal involvements across two recent games emphasise his rising impact as Germany prepare for the World Cup, with Nagelsmann noting room for defensive improvement.

Florian Wirtz delivered a standout display as Germany edged Switzerland 4-3 in a high-scoring friendly in Basel, directly contributing to every Germany goal. Wirtz struck twice and assisted two more, helping Julian Nagelsmann’s side recover from two first-half deficits.

Germany’s attack produced sustained pressure, generating 22 shots and 2.63 expected goals, while Switzerland posted seven attempts and 0.59 xG. Despite the win, Germany allowed three goals from limited danger, leaving both Wirtz and Nagelsmann highlighting defensive work needed before the World Cup.

Wirtz shines in Germany win over Switzerland

Wirtz acknowledged that this performance ranked as the finest of Germany career so far, given the impact on every goal. The midfielder’s brace included a looping first strike from near the left corner of the box, which drifted over goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, plus a more precise second finish.

Asked if he had just produced his best display for his country, Wirtz said: "Probably, yes. With this many goal involvements, yes. For the first goal, I'd be lying if I said I meant for it to go exactly there, but I'll take it. On the second goal, you can see that's exactly where I wanted the ball to go."

Wirtz admitted the first goal was accidental in its exact placement but stressed the second was fully intentional. Germany twice trailed in the opening half, yet Wirtz’s creative influence, combined with improved finishing, ensured Nagelsmann’s team overturned Switzerland’s lead in a match that swung repeatedly.

Since debuting for Germany in September 2021, Wirtz has produced 21 goal contributions, with 10 goals and 11 assists. Across that span, only Kai Havertz has matched the total, recording 15 goals and six assists, underlining Wirtz’s status as a central attacking figure.

Wirtz’s recent form for Germany contrasts with domestic output. Across the last two Germany matches, including a 6-0 win over Slovakia in November, Wirtz has six goal involvements. That equals the total from 27 Premier League appearances for Liverpool since joining from Bayer Leverkusen.

Germany now turn attention to another friendly, facing Ghana on Monday, where Nagelsmann is expected to rotate the squad. The coach continues evaluating options and combinations as Germany build toward the World Cup, aiming to refine both attacking patterns and defensive structure.

"Of course, we all want to reach the final and bring the World Cup home. We know it will be tough, but we have a great squad and we don't need to hide," Wirtz added. "We have a very good team and very good defenders. It's been quite some time since we played together. The goals we conceded were avoidable. We'll work on improving that."

Nagelsmann shared similar concerns about Germany’s defending against Switzerland, pointing to moments of passivity. However, Nagelsmann underlined that the overall performance still merited victory, given the quality and volume of chances created against usually disciplined Switzerland.

"We created many big chances against a team that usually concede very little. I think we could have scored many more goals," Nagelsmann told reporters. "Switzerland certainly made the most of their few chances. Flo scored a couple of exceptional goals, that has to be said. But defensively, things weren't always good today. We were too passive at times. That has to be pointed out quite clearly. Overall, though, we deserved to win."

Team Goals Shots Expected Goals (xG)
Germany 4 22 2.63
Switzerland 3 7 0.59

Despite the defensive issues against Switzerland, Germany left Basel encouraged by Wirtz’s influence and the volume of attacking chances. With another friendly against Ghana approaching and the World Cup on the horizon, Nagelsmann’s task now centres on tightening Germany’s back line while keeping Wirtz central to their approach.
