Wolves have dismissed head coach Gary O'Neil following a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town in the Premier League. This loss marked Wolves' fourth consecutive defeat, leaving them 19th in the standings, four points behind Crystal Palace in 17th place. Jack Taylor's late header sealed their fate on Saturday, adding to previous losses against Bournemouth, Everton, and West Ham.
Wolves have struggled this season, securing only nine points from 16 matches. They have conceded 40 goals, allowing two or more goals in 13 games. Fans expressed dissatisfaction with O'Neil after a heavy defeat at Goodison Park earlier in December. Despite speculation about potential replacements like Graham Potter and David Moyes, chairman Jeff Shi initially supported O'Neil.

O'Neil attributed the recent loss to individual player mistakes during post-match interviews. His position became untenable after the defeat. Wolves confirmed his departure and that of his backroom staff through a brief statement on Sunday. Jeff Shi expressed gratitude for O'Neil's dedication and wished him well for the future.
The team's last two defeats were marred by post-match incidents. Mario Lemina lost his captaincy after a scuffle following the West Ham match. Rayan Ait-Nouri received a second yellow card amid similar scenes after the Ipswich game.
O'Neil took over as head coach in August 2023 after Julen Lopetegui resigned due to recruitment issues. Initially, O'Neil had Wolves competing for European spots with notable wins over Manchester City, Tottenham, and Chelsea. However, an FA Cup quarter-final loss to Coventry City marked a downturn in form.
Following that defeat, Wolves managed only three wins from 26 Premier League matches, drawing five and losing 18. They scored 32 goals but conceded 61 during this period, achieving just one clean sheet against Southampton in November.
Before the Coventry loss, O'Neil had led Wolves to 12 wins out of 28 league games with a win ratio of 42.9%. This dropped significantly to 11.5% afterward. Wolves now aim to appoint a new head coach before facing Leicester City next Sunday.
The upcoming match against Leicester City is crucial as both teams are battling relegation threats. Wolves hope to stabilise their performance under new leadership and improve their standing in the league table.
