Women's Champions League: Arsenal And Chelsea Aim For Historic Comebacks In Knockout Stage

Arsenal and Chelsea are both trailing by two goals in their Women's Champions League knockout ties. They must overcome significant challenges against Real Madrid and Manchester City to progress to the semi-finals.

The UEFA Women's Champions League knockout stage has delivered unexpected results and thrilling drama. This week, four quarter-final ties will conclude, determining the semi-finalists. Defending champions Barcelona and last season's runners-up Lyon hold advantages in their second-leg matches. However, Chelsea and Arsenal face challenges, needing to overturn 2-0 deficits against Manchester City and Real Madrid, respectively. With four former champions among the eight teams, the competition is intense as they vie for a spot in the semi-finals.

Lyon holds a 2-0 lead over Bayern Munich from the first leg. The French side has advanced in 13 of their 15 previous quarter-final appearances. They have won three of their four UWCL games against Bayern, including a home victory in November 2021. Bayern aims to avoid a third consecutive loss in the competition after defeats to Arsenal and Lyon. The Opta Supercomputer gives Lyon a 62.6% chance of winning, while Bayern has a 17.6% chance.

Arsenal and Chelsea's Quest for Comebacks

Arsenal trails Real Madrid 2-0 after the first leg on a challenging pitch in Madrid. The Gunners aim to overturn this deficit at home, having done so three times out of seven occasions previously. Real Madrid seeks their first-ever semi-final appearance and aims for a third consecutive away win in the competition. The Opta Supercomputer favours Arsenal with a 66.9% win probability, but Real Madrid's recent form poses a threat.

Barcelona is poised for another semi-final appearance after a commanding 4-1 first-leg victory over Wolfsburg. They aim for a third consecutive title, matching Lyon's record of five straight wins from 2015-2020. Despite losing their first El Clasico against Real Madrid recently, Barcelona remains strong at home against German opposition, having won their last five encounters by an aggregate score of 15-1.

Chelsea vs Manchester City: Blues Seek Comeback

Chelsea faces Manchester City at Stamford Bridge with hopes of overturning a 2-0 deficit from the first leg. Chelsea recently defeated City in the WSL and League Cup final but must overcome City's strong position in this tie. Historically, Chelsea has struggled when losing the first leg but hopes to replicate their comeback against Bayern in the 2020-21 semi-finals.

Real Madrid's Signe Bruun and Linda Caicedo have been standout performers this season with impressive goal involvements. Bruun has five goals and three assists, while Caicedo has contributed four goals and four assists, including five goal contributions in her last four games.

Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati leads the competition with 24 chances created this season and has provided four assists so far. Her performance will be crucial as Barcelona seeks to maintain their dominance in the tournament.

Wolfsburg's Sveindis Jonsdottir boasts an impressive expected goals (xG) overperformance with +2.67 this season, scoring four goals from an xG of just 1.33. Despite recent away losses, Wolfsburg remains determined to challenge Barcelona.

Chelsea's Vivianne Miedema is pivotal with her exceptional scoring record in knockout stages since 2019-20, netting 12 goals across eight appearances with an impressive minutes-per-goal rate.

Manchester City aims to maintain their perfect record when winning the first leg of knockout ties. Their strong position makes them favourites to progress despite Chelsea's formidable home form against City across competitions.

The Opta Supercomputer predicts Barcelona as favourites with a 73.1% win probability against Wolfsburg at home. Meanwhile, Chelsea is favoured at 60.5% to win on the night against Manchester City but needs at least two goals to advance.

As these thrilling ties unfold, fans eagerly anticipate which teams will secure spots in next month's semi-finals amidst high stakes and fierce competition among Europe's elite clubs.
