Women's Super League: Chelsea And Manchester City Prepare For Crucial Showdown At Etihad Stadium

Chelsea meets Manchester City in the Women's Super League, seeking to uphold their unbeaten league record following recent cup matches. This encounter is pivotal for both teams as they navigate a busy schedule.

This weekend, the Women's Super League will feature the third of four consecutive encounters between Chelsea and Manchester City. The schedule has aligned for these teams to clash four times in just 12 days across three different competitions. Chelsea claimed victory in their first meeting, winning 2-1 to secure the League Cup trophy at Pride Park.

In a game that could have swung either way, Chelsea's renowned resilience, often referred to as the "monster mentality" by former manager Emma Hayes, proved decisive. This win extended their unbeaten streak to 31 matches across all competitions (W29 D2), putting them on the brink of setting a new record for the longest unbeaten run by a WSL team.

Chelsea and Manchester City Clash in WSL

However, Manchester City halted Chelsea's historic run during the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Vivianne Miedema scored twice, significantly denting Chelsea's hopes of finally clinching the Champions League title—a trophy that eluded them under Hayes and remains a key goal under Sonia Bompastor.

Despite this setback, Chelsea still hold an impressive league record this season. They remain undefeated in 16 league matches under Bompastor and have not lost in their last 19 WSL games (W17 D2), dating back to Hayes' final weeks in charge last year.

Both teams made strategic changes for their second meeting within four days. Khadija Shaw and Aoba Fujino were sidelined due to injuries, while Miedema was benched initially. Despite these absences, City's attack remained potent with Jess Park, Kerolin, and Lily Murphy joining Mary Fowler upfront.

Chelsea also adjusted their lineup with Keira Walsh and Aggie Beever-Jones replacing Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Sjoeke Nusken. Although Beever-Jones won possession eight times—matching Nathalie Bjorn as Chelsea's best—she also lost possession 18 times.

Upcoming Showdown

This upcoming match marks the third of four meetings between City and Chelsea in March alone—the first time two top-flight clubs have met four times in a single month during the WSL era. City previously suffered a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea in November but had been unbeaten at the Etihad Stadium before losing to Manchester United in January.

Cushing is notably the only manager to have defeated Bompastor's Blues this season. He boasts five WSL victories over Chelsea—no other manager has achieved more wins against them in this competition.

City's Key Players

Miedema continues to be a formidable threat against Chelsea. The former Arsenal star has contributed directly to nine goals in 10 WSL appearances against them (five goals, four assists). She could join an elite group of players involved in 10 or more goals against Chelsea in this competition.

Mary Fowler also impressed midweek by creating four chances—more than any other player—and delivering five crosses, second only to Sandy Baltimore from Chelsea who managed seven.

Title Race Dynamics

The Opta supercomputer slightly favours Bompastor's team for Sunday's match but acknowledges City's potential threat. Pre-match simulations give Chelsea a 38.6% chance of winning compared to City's 35.4%, with a draw predicted at 26%. Despite this close contest, Chelsea are overwhelmingly favoured (98.8%) to retain their title according to season predictions.

The title race may seem decided; however, Sunday's game poses one of the toughest challenges for Chelsea if they aim for an unbeaten WSL campaign while City seeks psychological advantage ahead of their next European encounter.
