World Cup 2014: Facts & figures from Round of 16

Rio de Janeiro, July 2: The Round of 16 of the 2014 Fifa World Cup concluded on Tuesday.

Eight matches were played in this round involving 16 teams and they produced a total of 18 goals, four less than that of 2010 (these exclude the goals scored in the penalty shootout).

With this, the total number of goals scored in the 2014 World Cup rose to 154.

Two matches were decided in the penalty shoot-outs in this phase. In the first match, Brazil beat Chile 3-2 after the match remained tied at 1-1 at the end of the extra time. The other match was decided 5-3 in favour of Costa Rica against Greece, with the regulation time score remaining 1-1. In the 2010 edition, only one match was decided in the penalty shootouts (Paraguay versus Japan).

Five out of eight matches went into the extra-time play in the Round of 16. The results in three of those were settled in the extra time. The matches between Germany and Algria and Belgium and USA produced the most number of goals in the extra time (three each). In 2010, no match except the one decided on penalties spilled ovr into the extra time.

Three matches in the Round of 16 ended in regulation time. Colombia's James Rodriguez scored two goals in regulation time against Uruguay, the most by an individual in this stage. The Argentina versus Switezrland saw the least number of goals being scored (1).

Nigeria's Yoseph Yobo was the only player to have scored a self-goal in this stage. He scored it against France.

Four teams each from the Eurpean and American continents advanced to the quarter-finals in the 2014 World Cup (Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Argentina from Americas while Germany, Netherlands, France and Belgium represented Europe). In 2010, the last eight had an African team (Ghana).

Five out of the last eight teams have been World Cup champions in the past. Colombia and Costa Rica are playing their first quarter-finals.

The previous best World Cup performance of Colombia and Costa Rica was reaching the pre-quarter finals and both made it for the last time in 1990.

This is also for the first time that all eight group winners have advanced to the quarter finals of the World Cup.
