World Cup 2026: Sensational U-Turn! Luis Suarez Unretires, Pleads for Uruguay Selection

Former Barcelona superstar Luis Suarez has stunned the football world by making a sensational U-turn on his international retirement, throwing himself back into contention for Uruguay ahead of the 2026 World Cup - just over 18 months after walking away from the Celeste.

The 39-year-old all-time leading scorer for his country, with a staggering 69 goals in 143 appearances, has not played for Uruguay since September 2024, when he announced it was "the right time" to end his 17-year international career.

The decision came after a bitter fallout with manager Marcelo Bielsa. The following month, Suarez admitted he felt "hurt" by the culture instilled by the coach, warning that "players are going to reach a limit and explode."

But now, in a dramatic twist, the fiery striker has revealed he has already apologised to those he needed to - and is ready to answer the call of duty once again.

"I would never say no to the national team if they need me, especially with a World Cup coming up," Suarez told reporters this week.

"At the time, I stepped aside to make way for the younger generation. I said something I shouldn't have said. I have already apologised to those I needed to apologise to."

The former Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid icon, who renewed his contract with Inter Miami in December, has shown he still has plenty left in the tank. He has scored two goals in eight appearances this season and insists the hunger remains as strong as ever.

"I still have that adrenaline, that desire to keep playing," Suarez said. "You realise you still have a little bit of life left in you. You get the urge to keep competing. You can see it on the pitch when you still get angry about the losses and the bad passes, and you still enjoy it when you score goals."

Suarez's glittering Uruguay career includes glory at the 2011 Copa America, where he was named Player of the Tournament, and heroic performances at multiple World Cups - most famously the 2010 quarter-final run and his memorable double against England in 2014.

Now, with Darwin Nunez leading the line with just 13 international goals, many Uruguay fans are already dreaming of the ultimate comeback story: their record scorer returning to fire the team deep into another World Cup. The footballing world waits to see if Marcelo Bielsa will welcome the prodigal son back - or if Suarez's sensational U-turn will spark one last unforgettable chapter in an already legendary career.
