World Cup 2026: Why Mexico Coach Javier Aguirre will be Unhappy despite El Tri's 2-0 Win

Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the Group A opener at Estadio Azteca on June 11.

The win, watched by over 80,000 passionate fans, gave the co-hosts a strong start and three vital points. However, head coach Javier Aguirre appeared far from jubilant on the touchline, his frustration evident despite the result.

The match began with high intensity. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a well-taken goal, the first of the tournament, capitalizing on quick interplay and slotting past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Quiñones was a constant threat, linking play effectively and nearly adding a second before halftime. Mexico dominated possession (around 60%) and created multiple chances, while South Africa stayed organized.

The game changed dramatically after the break. In the 49th minute, South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole received a straight red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Mexico extended their lead in the 67th minute when Raúl Jiménez clinically finished. Things worsened for Bafana Bafana when substitute Themba Zwane was sent off for violent conduct. Mexico suddenly held a two-man numerical advantage.

A Missed Opportunity for Mexico

This should have triggered a rout. Instead, Mexico failed to make the most of the extra players. They squandered several clear opportunities, with attackers showing imprecise finishing and hesitant decision-making in the final third. In midfield, the team looked increasingly jaded as the match progressed — passes lost sharpness, pressing intensity dropped, and fatigue set in despite the numerical edge. The dominance that defined the first half faded, allowing South Africa (even with nine men) to limit further damage.

To compound matters, Mexico’s own César Montes picked up a late red card in stoppage time, reducing the advantage.

Why Javier Aguirre will be Unhappy with El Tri

Aguirre, in his third stint with El Tri, will be particularly unhappy with the wastefulness. Mexico’s habit of not converting chances when they matter most, seen in past tournaments, could prove costly against tougher sides. Better stamina management and clinical edge are urgent needs.

While the three points and Quiñones’ standout display offer encouragement, the performance revealed vulnerabilities in sustaining pressure and maximizing advantages. The Mexicans have made a perfect start, but it could have been a lot more for the fans inside the stadium.
