Wrexham Ipswich Eight-Goal Thriller Drives Play-off Hopes In Championship

Wrexham staged a dramatic 5-3 comeback against Ipswich Town at the Stock Car? Ras to strengthen their Championship play-off aspirations. The match featured multiple lead changes, with Wrexham converting chances late to seal the win as Coventry extended their advantage at the summit. The result highlights Wrexham's capacity to overturn deficits and maintain momentum in the league.

Wrexham boosted Championship play-off hopes with a 5-3 comeback win over Ipswich Town, while Coventry City tightened control of top spot and Leicester City dropped late points in a dramatic day that also saw Portsmouth gain ground and Middlesbrough lose further momentum in the race for promotion and survival.

Phil Parkinson’s team twice trailed Ipswich at SToK Cae Ras but recovered to take victory, extending a strong record when falling behind. Elsewhere, Coventry beat West Brom 2-0, Portsmouth won 3-1 at Millwall, Middlesbrough drew 0-0 with Oxford United and Leicester were held 2-2 by Stoke City.

Wrexham edge Ipswich in eight-goal thriller

The meeting between Wrexham and Ipswich had finished 0-0 earlier this season, yet the return fixture produced eight goals and another turnaround from Parkinson’s players. Wrexham have now collected 18 points from losing positions in this Championship campaign, with only Watford ahead on 25, underlining how often Wrexham respond after setbacks.

Kieffer Moore struck after six minutes against former club Ipswich, finishing from a move started by Josh Windass. Anis Mehmeti levelled 14 minutes later, then Windass restored Wrexham’s advantage with a confident finish past Christian Walton. Ipswich responded again as Ivan Azon controlled Jack Taylor’s clever flick and guided a shot into the bottom-right corner.

Ipswich went ahead for the first time two minutes after half-time when Cedric Kipre drove in from around 20 yards, beating Arthur Okonkwo. Wrexham answered just after the hour as Nathan Broadhead’s effort deflected to George Thomason, who converted a first goal for the club, before Callum Doyle headed in Lewis O’Brien’s corner.

Broadhead later added Wrexham’s fifth, finishing neatly inside the penalty area four minutes from time to complete the scoring in a high-tempo contest. Wrexham posted 17 shots and an expected goals figure of 2.09, including 10 efforts on target, while Ipswich produced 13 attempts, with an xG of 0.81.

Coventry City strengthened their position at the top of the Championship thanks to a controlled 2-0 home victory over West Brom. Frank Lampard’s side came into the fixture after defeating second-placed Middlesbrough and again started quickly, applying pressure that left West Brom stretched in the early stages and struggling to clear danger.

Ephron Mason-Clark opened the scoring in the fifth minute, giving Coventry an ideal platform. Jack Rudoni soon doubled the advantage with a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the area that flew into the top-left corner. Coventry then managed the game, limiting West Brom’s threat and protecting their two-goal cushion.

West Brom could not find a response after the interval and remain without a victory in eight matches under new head coach Eric Ramsay. That poor sequence leaves West Brom only one point above the relegation places, raising pressure on Ramsay as Coventry move further clear in the race for automatic promotion.

Middlesbrough and Oxford United share points in Championship play-offs race

Coventry’s win carried extra weight because Middlesbrough slipped again, drawing 0-0 at home to Oxford United. Kim Hellberg’s Middlesbrough struggled badly before half-time, with Stanley Mills and Myles Peart-Harris both striking the woodwork as Oxford dominated the opening period and repeatedly threatened to take a deserved lead at Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough improved after the break and pushed Oxford back for long spells, yet the hosts lacked precision in the final third. Several attacks broke down around the box and clear openings were scarce, leaving Middlesbrough frustrated as the stalemate, combined with Coventry’s win, widened the gap in the promotion battle.

Leicester, Stoke and Portsmouth shape Championship play-offs picture

At the other end of the table, Gary Rowett came close to a winning start as Leicester City manager, only for Stoke City captain Ben Wilmot to score an 89th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw. Wilmot had already headed Stoke into a third-minute lead after meeting a cross with a powerful finish.

Leicester recovered as Divine Mukasa and Harry Winks turned the match around, putting Rowett’s team 2-1 ahead with 14 minutes left. Stoke refused to accept defeat and Wilmot struck again, prodding Lamine Cisse’s cross at the back post into the net, before Leicester then twice hit the frame of the goal.

Ben Nelson and Luke Thomas both saw stoppage-time efforts come back off the woodwork, denying Leicester a late winner and leaving Rowett waiting for a first victory. Those dropped points helped Portsmouth, who moved six points clear of Leicester with a 3-1 success away to Millwall, a side chasing the play-offs.

Gustavo Caballero and John Swift put Portsmouth two goals up at The Den, punishing defensive errors from Millwall. Casper De Norre replied to give the hosts hope, yet Marlon Pack made the game safe on 67 minutes, clinching three important points that eased pressure near the bottom and damaged Millwall’s play-off push.

Match Score Key Scorers
Wrexham vs Ipswich Town 5-3 Moore, Windass, Thomason, Doyle, Broadhead; Mehmeti, Azon, Kipre

The latest Championship fixtures tightened the play-off picture, with Wrexham’s high-scoring win and Coventry’s controlled display reinforcing strong positions. Middlesbrough’s draw, Portsmouth’s away victory and Leicester’s late setback all carried implications across promotion and relegation battles, leaving several clubs reassessing form and momentum as the season continues to develop.
