Wrexham's Draw At Bolton Signals Strong League One Presence, Says Parkinson

Phil Parkinson, Wrexham's manager, believes his team's goalless draw against Bolton Wanderers demonstrates their ability to compete in League One. Bolton, who finished third last season and lost in the play-off semi-finals to Oxford United, faced a newly promoted Wrexham side. Wrexham had previously secured a 3-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers in their League One opener.

Parkinson commented on the match, saying, "It was a good test and I was interested to see how we fared. They started so quickly and we didn't quite react to that. But we grew into the game." He added that both teams had their moments and it was crucial for Wrexham to show they could compete at this level.

Wrexham Competitive in League One

Despite the initial pressure from Bolton, Parkinson felt his team adapted well as the game progressed. "At times in the second period, we gained some control with the ball and looked like we could go on and win it," he said. However, he acknowledged that they had to rely on goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo for an outstanding save.

Bolton's manager Ian Evatt expressed disappointment over not securing a win. "I thought we deserved to win it," Evatt said. "We were the team probing and asking questions for large spells." He also mentioned a denied stoppage-time penalty for a shirt pull on captain Ricardo Santos.

Parkinson praised Okonkwo, an ex-Arsenal goalkeeper, for his performance. "I said to the owners in the summer Arthur was a key signing," he noted. "He's not just a good keeper; he's a good character as well." Okonkwo's save against Dion Charles was particularly highlighted as crucial.

Bolton had an impressive home record last season with 15 wins out of 24 matches. Evatt felt that his team should have continued this trend against Wrexham. He remarked on Wrexham's celebration of the draw as an indicator of Bolton's strong position.

The match ended with both teams unable to break the deadlock, but it provided valuable insights into Wrexham's capabilities at this level. The result suggests that Wrexham can hold their own against established League One teams.

"We showed at times we have got quality," Parkinson concluded. "It was important for us as well to show we can compete at this level, at the top end of the division."

The game highlighted both teams' strengths and areas for improvement as they continue their League One campaigns.

This draw serves as a confidence boost for Wrexham as they aim to establish themselves in League One after their promotion from the fourth tier.
