Women's Super League Expands To 14 Teams Starting In The 2026-27 Season

The Women's Super League will increase its teams from 12 to 14 for the 2026-27 season. Automatic promotions and relegations will be implemented, enhancing competition.

The Women's Super League (WSL) will increase its number of teams from 12 to 14 starting in the 2026-27 season. This decision, announced on Monday, concludes months of speculation about potential changes to the league's structure. Earlier suggestions included a temporary halt to relegation, which will not happen.

At the end of the 2025-26 season, the top two teams from WSL 2 will earn automatic promotion. Additionally, a play-off will occur between the third-placed team in WSL 2 and the bottom team in WSL for a spot in the top division.

WSL to Expand to 14 Teams in 2026

From the 2026-27 season onward, only one team from WSL 2 will be automatically promoted. The last-place team in WSL will face relegation. A play-off match will determine if the second-bottom team in WSL or the second-placed team in WSL 2 secures a spot in the league.

The proposed changes were discussed during a shareholders' meeting on Monday. Clubs voted in favour of expanding the league. The Football Association (FA) is expected to finalise these changes by July 31.

This expansion aims to enhance competition within women's football by providing more opportunities for clubs to compete at higher levels. It reflects ongoing efforts to develop and promote women's sports globally.
