"Timing Feels Right": Xabi Alonso Sets Out Chelsea Vision Ahead of New Premier League Season

A new era is underway at Stamford Bridge with Xabi Alonso taking charge of Chelsea, and the new manager believes the timing is right for both him and the club to build something special together.

Alonso outlined his ambitions for Chelsea, highlighting the quality within the squad while stressing the importance of establishing a clear identity during pre-season. The former midfielder arrives with a reputation for progressive football and a desire to take Chelsea back into contention for major honours.

"I have always been drawn to clubs with a rich history and a winning tradition, and Chelsea is certainly one of them. For me, this is a great honour and a fantastic opportunity," the Chelsea head coach said, quoted by JioStar.

"The timing feels right for both the club and myself, and I believe we are at a point where we can build something special together. I am fully aware of the expectations and the challenge ahead, but I am ready for it," the Spaniard added.

Alonso also spoke positively about the potential of the Chelsea squad, while acknowledging that improvements will be required as he begins shaping the team according to his philosophy.

"Chelsea have a great history and have enjoyed tremendous success over the last couple of decades. The squad is good and has a lot of potential. Of course, there are areas we need to improve," he said.

The Spaniard wants his side to play with intensity, control matches and provide an attractive brand of football, regardless of the venue.

"We want to build a team that plays with intensity, controls games, and competes at the highest level. We need to be smart, work hard, and create a team that brings energy to the pitch and plays attractive football," Alonso added.

The new Chelsea boss also believes the extended pre-season will be crucial in developing relationships and establishing his tactical identity.

"This period is crucial for building relationships on and off the pitch. We will use it to get to know each other and start creating the belief in how we want to play and compete," Alonso said.

Chelsea's new era will be put to the test when the Premier League 2026-27 season begins on August 22.
