Yaya Toure Appointed Head Coach Of Slovan Bratislava

Yaya Toure has accepted a three-year contract as head coach of Slovan Bratislava, giving the former midfielder a first role in management. The 43-year-old replaces Vladimir Weiss at the reigning Slovak champions, who secured the domestic league title again last season and remain Slovakia’s most decorated club.

Slovan Bratislava captured a 24th Slovak First Football League crown in the previous campaign, underlining long-term dominance. Club officials now turn to Toure’s experience as a player and assistant coach to maintain that success in domestic competitions and prepare for European qualification challenges in the coming seasons.

Toure named Slovan Bratislava head coach

Toure expressed enthusiasm about starting work with the squad and also paid tribute to Weiss. "I'm very happy and excited; honestly, I can't wait for us to get to work together on Monday, said Toure. My predecessor [Vladimir Weiss, a former City team-mate] deserves great respect for what he's achieved with Slovan. I want to build on that while also bringing something new and unique of my own."

The new Slovan Bratislava head coach also underlined personal motivation and long-term coaching ambitions. "Soccer is everything to me. I love challenges and am incredibly excited to coach a great club with a rich history, a beautiful stadium, and high ambitions. As an assistant, I had the opportunity to work with Roberto Mancini, for example, but I've longed for a long time to be able to work on my own project as a head coach."

Toure retired from playing in 2019 after an 18-year career, then moved into coaching roles. The former midfielder joined Saudi Arabia’s national team staff in November 2023, serving as assistant to Roberto Mancini. The spell followed other assistant positions, building technical experience before accepting full responsibility at Slovan.

Toure’s honours as a player give Slovan Bratislava a head coach familiar with high standards. Toure won three Premier League titles and one FA Cup with Manchester City. The midfielder also lifted three LaLiga trophies and a Champions League title while at Barcelona between 2007 and 2010, adding strong pedigree to the new role.

The new Slovan Bratislava head coach arrives with a record of major club success, as shown below.

Toure now faces the task of adapting those elite-level experiences to the Slovak First Football League and European qualifiers. Slovan Bratislava gain a head coach who has worked under high-profile managers and collected multiple titles, while Toure receives a first chance to lead a club and shape a long-term project.
