The year 2023 will be remembered for some groundbreaking moments in the world of football. There were a plethora of incidents which will go down in the folklore of footballing history book.
But amidst all this, the emergence of the Saudi Pro League warrants a different chapter.

2023 has seen a meteoric rise in football in Saudi Arabia, which has rocked the European market with some major coups. It all started with Saudi Arabia getting that humongous victory over Argentina in World Cup 2022, but no one would have predicted this gigantic impact.
It was Cristiano Ronaldo who embarked the Saudi life at the start of this year. After an unhappy exit from Manchester United, the Portugal star joined Al Nassr in the Saudi League in January this year.
And that opened the path and inspired many other European elite players to join the league. In the summer window of 2023, it was a complete coup by the Saudi clubs, who roped in some top-notch players and managers from Europe.
Former Liverpool stars Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson - all have joined different Saudi clubs. Chelsea had an exodus from the club, and most of them ended up joining different Saudi clubs, N'Golo Kante chose Al Ittihad, whereas Kalidou Koulibaky joined Al Hilal. Another groundbreaking moment was Neymar's arrival at Al Hilal at the flag end of the transfer window.
The Money: Saudi Pro League's biggest impetus is the money. The players are earning a fortune at all the clubs and it is around two to five folds of what they would have earned playing in Europe.
The backing of the Saudi Investment Fund has changed the complete scenario and the huge financial packages have obviously been the driving force of this massive influx of players from European pools.
The Absence of Tax: Along with this humongous money, the players have also gotten away from Income Tax. In Saudi Arabia, a footballer's income is not subject to income tax, hence the players can enjoy the full payment, without any tax returns to the Saudi government. That is another big luring factor which has made things easy in negotiations.
The question is now on the sustainability factor. Chinese Super League witnessed the arrival of many European players a few years back but it was just a one-season bloom and the bubble burst soon. Will the same thing repeat in Saudi Arabia?
There is a lesser chance of that happening. In the case of Saudi Arabia, we are witnessing many young players who are at the peak of their careers joining the Saudi Arabia clubs. The footballing infrastructure and other facilities is excellent across the country, the language barrier is not a huge issue in Saudi as it was in China. So maybe the beeline of the Saudi Pro League is not short-lived and it may continue for a long time.
All in all, the Saudi league and Saudi football have are emerging as an epicentre of global football in 2023. And we may witness groundbreaking changes in the coming years in the dynamics of the game.
