Yoane Wissa Vows To Fight For Newcastle United Future After Injury-Plagued Season

Yoane Wissa insists the focus remains on proving worth at Newcastle United, despite suggestions of a summer exit from St. James Park. The forward makes clear the aim is to stay, compete for selection and repay support, even after a disrupted first season that has raised questions over future plans at the club.

Newcastle United enter the weekend under pressure, with Eddie Howe’s side sitting 14th in the Premier League and struggling for form. They meet Europe-chasing Brighton on Saturday, and Wissa hopes to feature as Newcastle attempt to halt a damaging sequence that has raised concerns among supporters and analysts.

Yoane Wissa vows to fight for Newcastle

Recent league results underline the scale of Newcastle United’s problems. Howe’s team have lost four straight Premier League matches, including three consecutive 2-1 defeats followed by a 1-0 loss at Arsenal. Newcastle last suffered five league defeats in a row in January 2021, while only Wolves, between May and August 2021, have endured five successive one-goal Premier League losses.

Wissa’s individual impact at Newcastle United has been limited so far during the 2025-26 campaign. The 29-year-old has featured 24 times in all competitions, registering three goals and one assist. Only eight of those appearances have come from the start, which has restricted rhythm and confidence for a player still adjusting to new surroundings and expectations.

The forward’s difficult start at Newcastle United began almost immediately after arrival. Wissa joined from Brentford less than 12 months ago in a reported £50m transfer, signed alongside Nick Woltemade to replace outgoing striker Alexander Isak. A knee injury struck just days after the move, delaying progress and complicating the transition to Howe’s system.

The setback meant Wissa had to wait until December for a Newcastle United debut, which came against Burnley. The recovery process proved challenging, and Wissa later reflected that the return may have been rushed. Match sharpness took time to recover, while competition for attacking spots limited opportunities to build on early training ground work.

Yoane Wissa, Newcastle United future and public commitment

Despite reports suggesting Newcastle United could consider moving Wissa on at the end of the season, the striker stresses commitment to the project. "I am a soldier. I will keep going. I want the fans to know the love I have for this shirt. Looking forward to next season, I understand how big this club is," Wissa told Joel Beya TV.

Wissa outlined hopes for improvement and shared what playing for Newcastle United means personally. "I hope I'm going to do better. It's such a privilege. I just want to wear the shirt." Those words underline a desire to rebuild trust through performances, rather than seek a quick route out after a demanding first year.

The forward also gave a frank account of the decision to return from injury for Newcastle United. "I didn't wait for the proper time to come back [from injury]. It should have definitely been more. You just want to catch the train, but that was impossible, because my knee wasn't right." The admission highlights how ambition and pressure influenced early involvement.

Yoane Wissa goal record before Newcastle United move

Wissa arrived at Newcastle United with a strong scoring record from the previous Premier League season at Brentford. The striker hit 19 league goals, placing among the division’s leading scorers. Only Bryan Mbeumo and Chris Wood, both with 20, Erling Haaland with 22, Alexander Isak with 23 and Mohamed Salah with 29, finished ahead.

Eddie Howe has recently spoken in support of Wissa, expressing belief that Newcastle United will eventually see the Brentford version again. The head coach is confident the striker can rediscover that 19-goal level next season, provided fitness issues clear and a full pre-season allows proper integration into the tactical structure and dressing room dynamic.

As Newcastle United attempt to end their poor run against Brighton, Wissa’s situation frames a broader story at the club. A high-fee signing recovering from injury, limited minutes and a team in mixed form create a challenging backdrop, yet Wissa’s stated loyalty and Howe’s backing suggest both parties still expect a more productive campaign ahead.
