York City Boss Maynard Hails Warriors After 103rd-minute Equaliser Seals Promotion

York City earned promotion to the Football League in dramatic fashion, drawing 1-1 with Rochdale in a decisive National League clash at Crown Oil Arena. The result confirmed York as champions on 107 points, while Rochdale finished two points behind and now move into the play-offs.

Manager Stuart Maynard praised the mentality in the York squad after the late equaliser that changed the season’s outcome. Maynard told DAZN: "Everyone said it this season, 'York-time' and there's a real belief and togetherness in this group of players. The players are warriors. When they [Rochdale] scored, our players came over to the bench and said there was one last chance for us. We've done that all year. We're one big family. I love all of them."

The promotion race again raised questions about the National League system, where only two teams go up. This issue first drew major attention during Wrexham and Notts County’s 2022-23 contest, when they finished with 111 and 107 points. Many inside the game still argue that three teams should be promoted.

This season has provided more evidence for that argument. York topped the table with 107 points, Rochdale pushed them close on 105, and Carlisle United ended on 95 after beating Brackley Town on the final day. Maynard pointed to those totals when speaking about the need for change in the English football pyramid.

Maynard also expressed sympathy for other promotion contenders facing the same system. "I hope Rochdale go up. It's criminal in this league that teams can get over 100 points and not go up," Maynard said. "Even Carlisle and Mark Hughes, they end up with 95 points. It's crazy."

The decisive match between the top two swung wildly in stoppage time. With York holding the advantage on points before kick-off, a Rochdale win would have taken the title. The decisive drama came after the 90th minute, as both sides chased a decisive goal with everything at stake.

Rochdale almost broke York hearts first, when defender Callum Howe headed against the York crossbar in added time. Moments later, Ian Henderson curled an outside-of-the-foot cross into the area, and Emmanuel Dieseruvwe headed it in. Home supporters surged onto the pitch, believing promotion had been secured.

The celebrations proved premature, as play resumed after a long delay and York launched one last attack. Josh Stones drove forward in the 13th minute of stoppage time and struck a powerful shot at goal. A Rochdale defender tried to clear on the line, but officials ruled the ball had crossed.

That goal preserved the draw and confirmed York’s first season in League Two since 2015-16. It also left Rochdale needing to reset quickly ahead of the play-offs. York now plan for life back in the Football League, while many around the division continue to question whether the promotion rules fairly reflect such high points totals.
