Zubimendi Reveals Why Liverpool Transfer Offer Came At The Wrong Time For Him

Martin Zubimendi shares insights on rejecting Liverpool's transfer offer, citing a desire to stay with Real Sociedad and join Arsenal for growth opportunities.

Martin Zubimendi shared that his potential transfer to Liverpool during the 2024 summer window did not materialise because it was not the right moment for him. Instead, he joined Arsenal for a reported £51 million from Real Sociedad, following in the footsteps of fellow Spaniard Mikel Merino, who had moved to the Gunners earlier.

Zubimendi, known for his defensive midfield role, played 180 matches in LaLiga, contributing nine goals and six assists for Real Sociedad. Despite advanced discussions with Liverpool before the 2024-25 season, he chose to remain in Spain for another year. He believed Real Sociedad offered more opportunities at that time.

Zubimendi Discusses Liverpool Transfer Decision

The chance to work under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was a significant factor in Zubimendi's decision. "It wasn't an easy time for me because I wanted to stay at Real, but when offers come in, you start thinking about your options," he explained. He felt staying with Real Sociedad was the best choice as he still had much to learn there.

Reflecting on his move to Arsenal, Zubimendi expressed admiration for Arteta. "I don't know what he [Arteta] saw in me, but I saw him as one of the top coaches in Europe," he stated. The midfielder appreciated Arteta's meticulous approach and believed he found a quality coach at Arsenal.

Liverpool did not face setbacks from missing out on Zubimendi. Under Arne Slot's management, they clinched the Premier League title last season. This success indicated that their squad remained strong despite not securing Zubimendi's services.

Zubimendi's decision to join Arsenal reflects his desire for growth under a coach he respects highly. His journey from Real Sociedad highlights his commitment to developing his skills further while embracing new challenges in the Premier League.
