Amandeep Lakra, an energetic defender for the Indian Junior Men's Hockey Team, expresses joy at securing a spot in the squad for the upcoming FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup in Malaysia next month.
Set to kick off against Korea on December 5th, Amandeep reflects on his journey, drawing inspiration from Hockey India President Padma Shri Dr. Dilip Tirkey, a former India Captain and renowned defender.

Recalling a meeting with Dilip Tirkey during his early days, Amandeep shares the advice that fueled his dedication. Dilip's emphasis on hard work and focus motivated him to pursue excellence. Despite initial challenges and a pause in playing due to his father's transfer, Amandeep found ways to train, including grass sessions with his father.
Impressed by the drag-flicking skills of current India Captain Harmanpreet Singh, Amandeep acknowledges the learning opportunities during their training sessions in SAI Bengaluru. He discusses the struggle to find proper training facilities early in his career and highlights joining the SAI Centre in Bhopal through the Khelo India scheme in 2020, marking a turning point.
Amandeep's hockey journey includes participation in Sub Junior Nationals in 2015 and 2016 and a bronze medal win at the 11th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship in 2021. His breakthrough came in 2022 at the Sultan of Johor Cup, contributing to India's gold medal victory. He then played a crucial role in India's historic gold at the Men's Junior Asia Cup.
Inspired by India's senior hockey team's bronze medal win at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, ending a 41-year drought, Amandeep was motivated to pursue his dreams. Guided by his father's advice on the significance of hard work, he set his sights on achieving similar milestones.
Looking ahead to the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup 2023, Amandeep shares insights into the team's preparations, emphasizing a thorough analysis of weaknesses and a collective effort to refine their game. With a strong camaraderie within the squad, he expresses determination to give his best and contribute significantly to India's quest for victory in the tournament.
