In a dramatic semifinal clash of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024, held at the Moqi Training Base in Hulunbuir, China, it was the host nation that emerged victorious, sending Pakistan crashing out of the tournament.
The match, which ended 1-1 in regular time, was ultimately decided by a tense penalty shootout, where China's goalkeeper, Wang Caiyu, played a pivotal role in their triumph.

Earlier in the fifth-place match, Japan defeated Malaysia 4-2 in a penalty shootout too after the match ended a high-scoring 4-4 in regulation time following a last-minute goal by Japan's Seren Tanaka.
In the first semifinal, the game began with a tightly contested first quarter, where both teams struggled to break the deadlock. Pakistan, despite some early attacks, could not capitalise on their chances, while China's defense remained resolute. The first quarter concluded goalless, setting the stage for an intense encounter.
China opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a superb drag flick from Lu Yuanlin, leaving the Pakistani defense scrambling. The goal sparked urgency in the Pakistani ranks, but despite their efforts, they were unable to convert their opportunities. The Chinese goalkeeper Wang Caiyu was particularly impressive, making crucial saves to deny Pakistan's attempts.
Pakistan managed to equalise in the 43rd minute through Ahmad Nadeem, whose precise shot found the corner of the net, bringing the score to 1-1. However, the equalizer was not enough to secure a win in regular time, and the match proceeded to a penalty shootout.
The shootout was a test of nerves and skill. China's Wang Caiyu emerged as the hero, making a series of spectacular saves. His performance was instrumental as he thwarted shots from Abdul Rehman, Ajaz Ahmed, and Arshad Liaqat, among others. On the other hand, Pakistan's goalkeeper Muneeb also made key saves, including one from Lu Yuanlin, but his efforts were not enough to overcome China's advantage.
The decisive moment came when Lin Changliang and Chen Benhai scored for China, while Pakistan's attempts failed to breach Wang Caiyu's defense. With the final score in the shootout standing at 0-2, China secured their place in the final.
As the home crowd celebrated, Pakistan was left to reflect on their missed opportunities and a disappointing exit from the tournament. China, buoyed by their victory, now awaits the winner of the India vs Korea semifinal, looking forward to the championship clash.
