Five Goals, Fifth Gold: India Rule Asian Games Hockey Again
India retained their Asian Games men's hockey title with a commanding 5-1 victory over Malaysia in the final at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium on Saturday, securing their fifth gold medal in the competition and a direct berth at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The defending champions were made to work for their advantage in a closely contested first half, but pulled away decisively after the break. Hardik Singh's penalty stroke in the third quarter shifted the momentum before India added three more goals, turning the final into a one-sided finish.
The victory also marked India's first successful defence of the Asian Games men's hockey title.
Harmanpreet gives India early lead
India began on the front foot and controlled much of the opening quarter, enjoying 63 per cent possession and creating the more dangerous entries into the Malaysian circle.
The pressure finally told in the 11th minute when India won their first penalty corner. After an initial failed trap, Harmanpreet Singh got the execution right with his second attempt, beating the first rusher with a powerful drag-flick to put India 1-0 ahead.
Malaysia responded almost immediately. Shello Silverius produced a superb finish in the 14th minute, controlling an aerial ball before smashing a half-volley into the roof of the net from the left side of the circle.
The first quarter ended 1-1, leaving India with plenty of work still to do against an aggressive Malaysian side.
Jugraj restores India's advantage
India increased the tempo in the second quarter and began finding more openings around the Malaysian circle.
Malaysia goalkeeper Mat Deris kept out an effort from Abhishek before India eventually earned another penalty corner. This time, Jugraj Singh took responsibility and found the bottom-left corner with a precise drag-flick in the 23rd minute.
India took a 2-1 lead into half-time, with their defence holding firm despite Malaysia's attacking threat.
Hardik's penalty stroke changes the final
Malaysia continued to press after the interval, but India gradually began to take control.
India earned another penalty corner in the 42nd minute after Abhishek's slap struck a Malaysian foot. The move eventually resulted in a penalty stroke after Mandeep Singh's diving attempt was blocked by a defender on the goal line.
Hardik Singh made no mistake from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and restoring India's two-goal cushion at 3-1.
That goal proved to be the turning point.
Malaysia had made India work throughout the opening two quarters, but the third goal appeared to drain some of the momentum from their challenge. India finished the third quarter with a 3-1 lead.
India pull away in the final quarter
India put the contest beyond Malaysia early in the final quarter.
Abhishek produced a superb run along the baseline before cutting the ball back towards the far post, where Shilanand Lakra was waiting to finish from close range. The goal gave India a 4-1 lead in the 54th minute.
Three minutes later, Harmanpreet added his second of the match.
India won another penalty corner after a successful review, and the ball fell to Harmanpreet after the variation. The captain unleashed another powerful drag-flick into the top-left corner to make it 5-1.
Malaysia struggled to find a response as the final minutes ticked away. India continued to threaten on the counter before managing the closing stages and seeing out a comprehensive victory.
The 5-1 triumph confirmed India as Asian Games champions for the fifth time and secured back-to-back titles for the first time in their history.
The result also completed a historic hockey double for India, with both the men's and women's teams winning gold at the same Asian Games for the first time.
