India Beat Pakistan 4-3 To Reach Asian Games Hockey Final

India produced a dramatic late fightback of their own to beat Pakistan 4-3 in a thrilling Asian Games men's hockey semifinal in Nagoya on Thursday, booking their place in the gold-medal match.

Abhishek scored the decisive goal in the final minute after Pakistan had fought back from 0-3 down to level the contest at 3-3. India's victory extended their unbeaten run against Pakistan and kept their hopes of retaining the Asian Games title alive.

India will face either South Korea or Malaysia in the final on October 3.

Harmanpreet puts India in control

India made an aggressive start and immediately put Pakistan under pressure, earning a series of early penalty corners.

Harmanpreet Singh eventually made the pressure count in the fifth minute, powering a drag-flick past Pakistan goalkeeper Abu Mahmood to give India a 1-0 lead.

The Indian captain struck again before the end of the opening quarter, converting another penalty corner with a fierce effort to double the advantage.

India ended the first quarter 2-0 ahead and had already established a significant advantage in penalty corners and possession.

Sukhjeet extends India's lead

India continued to control the contest in the second quarter and added a third goal through Sukhjeet Singh.

A flowing move from the left created the opening, with Lakra finding Sukhjeet in front of goal. The forward made no mistake, putting India 3-0 ahead.

At that stage, India appeared to be firmly in command. They had created more circle entries, enjoyed greater possession and repeatedly threatened Pakistan's defence.

Pakistan, however, finally found a way back before half-time.

Pakistan begin their comeback

Abu Mahmood pulled one goal back for Pakistan from a penalty corner, reducing India's lead to 3-1.

The goal gave Pakistan renewed momentum and changed the complexion of the contest. India had dominated much of the opening half, but Pakistan entered the second half with a route back into the match.

India continued to create opportunities early in the third quarter but gradually became more defensive as Pakistan increased the pressure.

Hannan Shahid makes it 3-2

Pakistan's persistence was rewarded late in the third quarter when Hannan Shahid found the net.

India failed to deal with the ball at the far post, allowing Hannan to collect the pass and push it into the goal.

Suddenly, the match was 3-2.

The goal gave Pakistan belief heading into the final quarter, while India faced the challenge of protecting a lead that had once stood at three goals.

Waheed Rana completes Pakistan's comeback

Pakistan carried their momentum into the fourth quarter and completed an extraordinary comeback through Waheed Rana.

Rana scored to make it 3-3, with Pakistan scoring twice in a matter of minutes to erase India's three-goal advantage.

India had gone into a defensive mode after establishing their early lead, and Pakistan capitalised on the change in approach.

With the match level and time running out, a shootout appeared increasingly likely.

Abhishek delivers the decisive blow

Just when Pakistan appeared to have completed the comeback, India found the winning goal.

With seconds remaining, Abhishek unleashed a powerful effort from the edge of the circle that beat the Pakistan defence and gave India a 4-3 lead.

Pakistan had no time to respond as the final whistle confirmed India's place in the Asian Games final.

The victory capped one of the most dramatic India-Pakistan hockey matches of the tournament, with India having led 3-0 before surviving Pakistan's late surge.

India continue unbeaten run against Pakistan

The result extended India's unbeaten run against Pakistan, with the Indian men's team having not lost to their arch-rivals since the 2016 South Asian Games final.

It also continued India's unbeaten campaign against Asian opposition at the Asian Games.

Harmanpreet's two goals took his tournament tally to 10, while India's overall goal tally reached 51 - the highest in the competition at the time of the semifinal.

India also secured a place in the Asian Games men's hockey final, continuing a landmark campaign for the country's hockey teams. Both the Indian men's and women's teams have reached the gold-medal matches, the first time since 1998 that India have had both teams in the Asian Games hockey finals.

Gold medal remains the target

India entered the semifinal as the defending Asian Games champions after winning gold at Hangzhou in 2023.

Their dramatic victory over Pakistan means they now have one match standing between them and another Asian Games title.

India will face the winner of the second semifinal between South Korea and Malaysia in the final on October 3.

After surviving a three-goal comeback from Pakistan, India will head into the final with the opportunity to retain their Asian Games crown.
