Bhubaneswar, June 21: The newly-elected BJP government in Odisha has reaffirmed its commitment to the development of hockey by extending its sponsorship deal with Hockey India until 2036.
This extension highlights the state's dedication to the sport, which brought India a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics after more than four decades.

Odisha has been a significant supporter of Indian hockey since 2018, with former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik playing a pivotal role in promoting the sport. The sponsorship deal, renewed by Patnaik last year, was initially set to run until 2033.
However, the current administration has extended the agreement by an additional three years, ensuring support until 2036. This year holds special significance for Odisha as it marks the centenary of its establishment as an independent state.
Over the past decade, Odisha has emerged as the epicenter of Indian hockey. The state has hosted two consecutive men's World Cups, in 2018 (Bhubaneswar) and 2023 (Bhubaneswar and Rourkela), as well as the India leg of the FIH Pro League earlier this year. These events have solidified Odisha's reputation as a key player in the international hockey scene.
The decision to extend the sponsorship deal was finalised at a high-level meeting on Thursday. Attendees included Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey, Secretary-General Bhola Nath Singh, and Chief Minister of Odisha Mohan Charan Majhi, among others.
In a statement, Tirkey expressed gratitude for Odisha's continued support, saying, "We had a productive meeting with the Chief Minister. We discussed the advancement of sports and strategies to elevate our beloved sport to new heights. We are thankful to Odisha for their commitment to Indian hockey. This partnership has played a pivotal role in uplifting the sport."
Bhola Nath Singh echoed Tirkey's sentiments, adding, "The Government of Odisha has consistently been a pillar of strength for our sport. Their decision to consider extending our partnership until 2036 underscores their dedication to sports and youth development."
Odisha's extended sponsorship deal with Hockey India signifies the state's unwavering dedication to the growth and promotion of hockey in India. With this partnership set to continue until 2036, the future of Indian hockey looks promising, with Odisha at the forefront of its development.
