Charlesworth appointed coach cum advisor for Indian hockey

New Delhi, Mar 17 (UNI) Brushing aside the IHF's objection, the government tonight stepped in a big way and appointed former Australian Olympian Ric Charlesworth as coach cum technical advisor for hockey affairs.

The government was left with no choice but to appoint Charlesworth as coach in view of the World Hockey body's (FIH) threat to shift the 2010 World Cup from India if their nominee (Charlesworth) was not given a responsible position.

The sports ministry made the official announcement regarding Charlesworth's appointment after India Hockey Federation (IHF) chief K P S Gill's meeting with DG, SAI, Ratan Wattal, secretary S K Arora and Joint Secretary I Srinivasan.

''We will use his (Charlesworth) expertise not only for the Men's national team but also for the Women's team and the juniors' team as well,'' Srinivasan told newspersons here tonight.

''The focus, at the moment is on the Women's Olympic qualifiers,'' he said.

He added that for the moment, Charlesworth will stay with the IHF for a period of one year and the governing body might renew his contract after that.
