Hockey India (HI) has lashed out at the poor umpiring standards in the India vs Great Britain quarter-final match at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday, August 4. India managed a thrilling win after a penalty shootout, but had to play with 10 players for over 40 minutes.
A controversial red card was issued against key defender Amit Rohidas in the 17th minute for 'hitting' an opposition player with his stick. Hockey India in its official complaint has raised questions over the video review system.

"This is to inform you that Hockey India has officially raised concerns about the quality of umpiring and decision-making in the ongoing Paris Olympic Games 2024 (Men's tournament). The complaint focuses on a critical match between India and Great Britain, where several inconsistencies in officiating potentially influenced the game's outcome," Hockey India said in its release.
"Inconsistent video umpire reviews, particularly regarding the red card decision for an Indian player, which has eroded trust in the video review system," it added.
Further, Hockey India also pointed out that Great Britain goalkeeper Ollie Payne was being coached from behind the goalpost during the penalty shootout which India won 4-2 after a 1-1 deadlock. The use of a video tablet by Payne during the shootout has also been mentioned in the complaint.
"These incidents have undermined confidence in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India calls for a thorough review of these matters to uphold the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in future matches," the Hockey India complaint added.
The Indian men's hockey team will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Germany and Argentina in the semi-final. The match will be played late night on Sunday.
