FIH Hockey World Cup 2026: Argentina Breaks Dutch Hearts; Claims WC in a Dramatic Shootout

New Delhi, August 29: Argentina ended the Netherlands' four-title winning streak spectacularly, defeating the co-hosts 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the two sides were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time to claim the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 women's title on Saturday.

The triumph marked Argentina's third World Cup crown and avenged their defeats to the Netherlands in the 2022 World Cup final and the Tokyo Olympics gold-medal match, both of which ended 3-1 in favour of the Dutch.

The Netherlands took the lead in the 30th minute through Yibbi Jansen, regarded as one of the world's finest drag-flickers. Jansen converted a penalty corner with a powerful strike to register her eighth goal of the tournament.

Argentina, however, refused to relent and were rewarded for their sustained pressure in the closing stages. After earning eight penalty corners, captain Maria Granatto finally broke through in the 54th minute, converting from a rebound after Agustina Gorzelany's flick was initially stopped.

With neither side able to find a winner, the contest went into a shootout. Marijn Veen scored for the Netherlands, but Pien Sanders and Felice Albers missed their attempts. Argentina kept their composure as Victoria Granatto, Brisa Bruggesser and Sofia Cairo found the net to seal a memorable victory. Zoe Diaz also scored, but her effort was ruled out following a referral.

The result was particularly significant given the Netherlands' dominance in recent editions. The nine-time champions had been seeking a fifth successive title on home soil but ultimately fell short against an Argentina side determined to rewrite the narrative.

Earlier, Belgium defeated Australia 1-0 in a closely fought third-place play-off to secure the bronze medal.

The 2026 World Cup concludes on Sunday, with Spain facing Germany in the men's final at 4:30 pm CEST at the new Belfius Hockey Arena in Wavre, Belgium.
