The FIH Hockey5s Men's World Cup 2024 is the inaugural edition of the Hockey5s format in the discipline of field hockey. The tournament will be played from January 28 to 31 in Muscat, Oman. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is the official organiser of the event.

Hockey5s is a shorter version of field hockey which presents a faster game for the viewers with some innovative rules. Not more than five players, including the goalkeeper, can be fielded by a team in a court that shouldn't be less than 40mx28m and not more than 55mx42m.

To put things into cricket terms for better understanding, the Hockey5s is the T20 format of cricket. The format was first introduced in 2013 to garner more eyeballs around the globe. The 2014 Youth Olympics in China was the first time this format was played in a major event. Although Hockey5s is not part of a big-ticket event such as Olympics or the Asian Games, a first World Cup edition is likely to create a buzz around the modern format of the game.

Will India participate in FIH Hockey5s Men's World Cup 2024?

India is one of the 16 participating nations in the inaugural edition of the FIH Hockey5s men's World Cup in Oman. India qualified for the event on the virtue of being the champions of Men's Hockey5s Asia Cup World Qualifier in Salalah last year in September. The Men in Blue defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in penalties (2-0) following an intense 4-4 draw in the stipulated time of 20 minutes.

Tokyo Olympics bronze Simranjeet Singh will lead the 10-member Indian contingent, which also includes Indian men's junior team captain Uttam Singh. Mandeep Mor and Manjeet will be placed in the defence line, while Mohd Raheel Mouseen and Maninder Singh are part of the midfield. Pawan Rajbhar and Gurjot Singh are the two forwards to work alongside Simranjeet and Uttam with Suraj Karkera and Prashant Kumar Chauhan as the two designated goalkeepers.

What is the format of FIH Hockey5s Men's World Cup 2024?

The FIH Hockey5s Men's World Cup 2024 has four pools comprising four teams in each of them. Each team plays a total of three matches in the group stage and the top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. All the 24 group fixtures will take place between January 28 and 29. The quarterfinals and semifinals are staged on January 30 followed by the final and third-place matches on January 31.

India begins its campaign against Switzerland on January 28. On the same day, they play against Egypt in the evening. India's final group fixture is scheduled against Jamaica on January 29.
