FIH Pro League: India thrash Pakistan 7-1 in dominant win

The Indian men's hockey team delivered a dominant display to crush traditional rivals Pakistan 7-1 in their return fixture of the FIH Pro League's London leg at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Friday.

After conceding the opening goal, India staged a remarkable comeback, scoring seven unanswered goals through Sukhjeet Singh (20'), captain Harmanpreet Singh (26'), Hardik Singh (34'), Jugraj Singh (35'), Abhishek (41'), Raj Kumar Pal (44') and Dilpreet Singh (54'). Hardik Singh was adjudged the Player of the Match for his commanding performance in midfield.

The contest began at a fast pace, with India earning the first penalty corner inside the opening two minutes following an energetic run from Mandeep Singh. While India enjoyed more possession, Pakistan looked dangerous on the counter and capitalised on their first penalty corner in the 13th minute. Captain Abu Bakar Mahmood converted with a powerful drag-flick after Pakistan's video referral failed, giving his side a 1-0 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.

India gradually took control in the second quarter with quick ball movement and accurate long passes. Pakistan were dealt a blow in the 18th minute when Ahmad Nadeem was forced off after being struck in the face by a deflected pass from teammate Ali Ghazanfar.

Moments later, India restored parity. Harmanpreet's drag-flick from a penalty corner was deftly redirected into the goal by Sukhjeet Singh in the 20th minute. Six minutes later, the Indian skipper produced another thunderous drag-flick, this time finding the top corner directly to put India 2-1 ahead before the halftime break.

India continued their dominance after the restart. Consecutive penalty corners in the 34th minute resulted in a penalty stroke, which Hardik Singh converted confidently to stretch the lead. Pakistan earned two penalty corners soon after but were denied by India's disciplined defence.

The hosts of possession quickly turned defence into attack as Dilpreet Singh and Sukhjeet combined brilliantly to set up Jugraj Singh, who finished clinically in the 35th minute for India's fourth goal.

India's relentless attacking pressure continued in the third quarter. Sukhjeet turned provider again, setting up Abhishek to score while on the move in the 41st minute. Soon after, India forced four successive penalty corners, with Raj Kumar Pal reacting fastest to tap home the rebound from Harmanpreet's effort and make it 6-1.

The final quarter saw India comfortably manage the game while continuing to threaten. Dilpreet Singh added the seventh goal in the 54th minute after another slick attacking move. Pakistan received two late penalty corners, but experienced midfielder Manpreet Singh produced crucial blocks to preserve India's emphatic 7-1 victory and complete a memorable performance.
