FIH Pro League: Indian Women's Hockey Team falls 0-2 to Belgium, Salima Tete-led side suffers second straight defeat

Antwerp, May 24: In a closely-fought encounter, the Indian Women's Hockey Team suffered a 0-2 defeat against Belgium during their second match of the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24. Goals from Alexia 'T Serstevens (34') and Louise Dewaet (36') secured the victory for Belgium.

Indian eves, who lost to Argentina in their first match of the European leg 0-5 on May 22, have suffered their second consecutive defeat in the competition.

The Salima Tete-led side started the match aggressively, quickly earning a penalty corner but failing to convert it. The Indian team maintained the pressure on Belgium, who initially struggled with possession and relied on counter-attacks.

India's defence held firm, denying Belgium any scoring opportunities. Towards the end of the first quarter, Belgium won a penalty corner, but Indian goalkeeper Savita made a comfortable save. Despite several circle entries by India, the first quarter ended goalless.

In the second quarter, Belgium ramped up their offensive efforts with rigorous passing and consistent attacks. India, however, absorbed the pressure well, maintaining possession and executing quick passes that tested the Belgian defence. Both teams created chances but failed to break the deadlock, leading to a 0-0 scoreline at halftime.

Belgium emerged with renewed vigour in the third quarter, which paid off quickly. Alexia 'T Serstevens scored in the 34th minute, followed by Louise Dewaet in the 36th minute, giving Belgium a 2-0 lead. India responded by increasing their intensity and earned a penalty corner towards the end of the third quarter but could not capitalize on it.

In the fourth quarter, coach Harender Singh's side continued to push forward, making early advances and putting Belgium's defence under significant pressure. Despite maintaining possession and creating numerous circle entries, Indian eves were unable to find the back of the net. Belgium's defence remained resolute, securing a 2-0 victory for the hosts.

Notably, Indian forward Deepika Soreng made her senior team debut in this match, marking a significant milestone in her career. The Indian Women's Hockey Team will take on Belgium again in their next match at 17:30 IST on May 25.
