FIH Women's Junior Hockey World Cup: India Clinches 9th Place, Triumphs 3-2 Over USA In Shootout

In a thrilling clash during the FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup 2023 classification match, the Indian junior women's hockey team demonstrated remarkable resilience in their tournament's final game.

The team secured a sensational 3-2 victory against the USA in a sudden-death penalty shootout on Sunday morning, after the game ended 2-2 in regular time, marking an intense battle.

According to a press release from Hockey India, India's triumph in this contest secured their 9th-place finish in the tournament.

Throughout the allocated 60 minutes, Manju Chorsiya (11') and Sunelita Toppo (57') scored a goal each for India, while Kiersten Thomassey (27', 53') netted a brace for the USA.

The tension-filled penalty shootout saw Mumtaz Khan and Rutaja Dadaso Pisal successfully converting their chances for India, with the latter also scoring in sudden death to clinch the victory.

On the opposing side, Katie Dixon and Olivia Bent-Cole managed to score for the USA in the penalty shootout.

India started strong, relentlessly pressing the USA and penetrating their defense multiple times. Chorsiya's perfectly placed goal from the first penalty corner gave India a deserved lead, and they continued their aggressive play throughout the game.

Despite the USA winning a penalty corner in the last minute of the first quarter, they couldn't capitalize, and India led 1-0.

In the second quarter, India focused on ball possession but faced solid defense from the USA. Thomassey's precise strike leveled the score at 1-1, and both teams entered halftime with the score tied.

India launched a barrage of attacks in the third quarter but couldn't convert, leading to a goalless quarter.

The USA took the lead in the fourth quarter with Thomassey's second goal, but India fought back, with Toppo leveling the score at 2-2. The game ended in a draw, leading to penalty shootouts where both teams converted two shots each, forcing sudden death.

India's goalkeeper Madhuri Kindo made a crucial save, and Pisal calmly converted her shot, securing the 3-2 victory for India.

The victory showcased India's determination and resilience, providing an exhilarating end to their campaign in the FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup 2023.
