FIH Women's Olympic Qualifiers: Indian Women's Hockey Team Misses Paris Flight, What's Next?

By Subhashish Sarkar

When India finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics, everyone thought that they would win a medal in the Paris Olympics. At that time, no one could have imagined that they wouldn't qualify for the Paris Tournament.

The Indian women's hockey team won't be in the next Paris Games because they lost 0-1 to Japan in the FIH Women's Hockey Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi. Japan secured victory with Kana Urata's sixth-minute goal from a penalty corner.

The scoreline stayed unchanged till the final hooter was blown which meant the Indian women's hockey team failed to make it to the Olympics for the first time since 2016.

India had nine chances to score from penalty corners but missed all of them. Despite having possession and territorial advantage for the last three quarters, India couldn't score a goal. Japan tested India's patience and ultimately succeeded.

"We didn't start well defensively." Indian women's hockey team head coach Janneke Schopman said after the match. "We dominated the whole game after 1-0 but we needed to score goals, and we didn't," he added further.

When asked about the Indian women's hockey team's penalty conversion, Schopman replied, "I don't know; it looks so fresh after the game. We tried but we didn't make it, and it's going to hurt for a long time."

Check the numbers. India had more chances with 13 circle penetrations to Japan's 8, and 11 shots on goal to Japan's 6, but what mattered was that Indian eves couldn't convert any of their 9 penalty corners, while Japan converted one out of their 4.

Japan secured their spot in the Paris Olympics by finishing third in this tournament, as the top three teams qualified. Finalists Germany and the USA have also secured their spots.

India won the Asian Champions Trophy in Ranchi last year and also defeated Japan 2-1 in the group stage but this time Japan took their revenge and will be taking a flight to Paris. This defeat is going to be remembered for a long time.

The disappointment of the Indian women's hockey team's failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics demands a pragmatic shift in focus for Hockey India. The initial optimism derived from their commendable fourth-place finish in the Tokyo Olympics has now transformed into a bitter reality that necessitates a strategic reevaluation of the team's trajectory.

In the aftermath of this setback, it becomes imperative for Hockey India to chart a course for the future. The organization must prioritize comprehensive preparations to fortify the team and navigate upcoming challenges. This involves scrutinizing the weaknesses exposed in the Olympic qualifiers and implementing corrective measures.

As the team recalibrates its aspirations for Paris, setting sights on future FIH tournaments becomes paramount. Looking further ahead, the objective should be to target qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics by building a team for the future.
