The Indian Men's Hockey Team wrapped up the Bhubaneswar leg of the FIH Pro League 2024/25 with a determined 2-1 victory over England at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. Captain Harmanpreet Singh led by example, netting twice (26', 33') to guide India to an important win, lifting them to third place in the league standings.
England, coming off a thrilling 3-2 win the previous day, struggled to create clear openings in the early stages of the match. India, on the other hand, showed attacking intent but lacked sharpness in the final third, making for a tense and goalless first quarter.

The second quarter saw India ramp up the pressure, with Abhishek displaying brilliant dribbling skills to beat multiple defenders before setting up a chance for Sukhjeet Singh, who was unable to convert from close range. Abhishek had another opportunity soon after but dragged his shot wide, as the hosts pushed forward relentlessly.
A setback came in the 24th minute when Jugraj Singh was shown a yellow card for a foul on Jacob Payton, temporarily reducing India to ten men. However, despite being a player down, India continued their attacking momentum. A brilliant display of 3D skills by Hardik Singh earned India a penalty corner in the 26th minute. Harmanpreet Singh, known for his exceptional drag-flicking, stepped up and fired a powerful strike down the center, giving India a well-deserved 1-0 lead. His celebration ignited the crowd, setting the stadium alight.
England responded quickly as Harmanpreet's tackle on Payton inside the circle resulted in a penalty stroke. Captain Conor Williamson calmly slotted the ball past Suraj Karkera in the 30th minute, bringing the game level at 1-1.
Just three minutes later, Harmanpreet was at it again, restoring India's lead with a stunning drag-flick into the top right corner. His powerful strike left the England defense helpless as he celebrated with passion, putting India back in control.
England attempted to mount a comeback with counterattacks, but India's defensive structure held strong. The visitors started the final quarter brightly and won a penalty corner in the 48th minute, but Karkera made a crucial save to deny Sam Ward.
India almost extended their lead when Hardik Singh delivered a lofted pass into the circle, but England's goalkeeper Oliver Payne reacted swiftly to clear the danger. With just three minutes left, England took off their goalkeeper in a desperate attempt to find an equalizer, opting for an extra outfield player. However, India's defense stood firm under pressure, sealing a hard-fought victory and concluding their Bhubaneswar campaign on a strong note.
