The opening ceremony of the Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 has been canceled as a mark of respect for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday.
In light of his passing, the Governing Committee decided to cancel the scheduled performances by Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan and popular singer King, originally planned for the ceremony.

This decision was made to honor ex PM's legacy and the significance of the moment. Instead, the event will focus on paying tribute while still proceeding with the scheduled match between Team Gonasika and Delhi SG Pipers, which starts from 8:15 PM IST.
"This is to inform you that as a mark of respect for the former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday, the Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 Governing Committee has announced the cancellation of scheduled performances by Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan and popular singer King at the opening ceremony, originally set to take place on December 28, 2024, in Rourkela," the HIL announced in a statement.
After a seven-year absence, the Hockey India League is making a comeback. The revamped format features eight teams in the men's division and six in the women's division. This edition aims to address the shortcomings of previous seasons, which led to the league's unsustainability. To achieve this, organizers have collaborated with a private firm to devise a more viable and enduring framework for the league's operations. The women's tournament will start from 12th January, 2025 onwards.
Total number of Teams: Delhi SG Pipers, Hyderabad Toofans, Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers, Soorma Hockey Club, Tamil Nadu Dragons, Team Gonasika, UP Rudras, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers.
The league will feature prominent Indian players like Harmanpreet Singh, Manpreet Singh, and Hardik Singh, alongside global stars such as Blake Govers and Thierry Brinkman. Although the entertainment segment of the opening ceremony has been scaled back, the primary emphasis remains on providing high-quality hockey action to fans.
