The Hockey India League Player Auction 2024-25 witnessed a spirited buying spree 54 players, including 18 from overseas, found new clubs on its inaugural day. A total of 16 crores 88 lakhs 50 thousand was disbursed by the eight franchises, highlighting the demand for Indian core team members and international drag-flick specialists. Among the top acquisitions, Gurjant Singh was the first to be sold, securing a deal for 19 lakh, while Indian team captain and renowned drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh commanded the highest bid of the day at 78 lakh, both joining Soorma Hockey Club.
Following closely, Abhishek was snapped up by Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers for 72 lakh, making him the day's second priciest acquisition. Hardik Singh joined UP Rudras for 70 lakh, and Germany's Gonzalo Peillat became the most expensive foreign player by joining Hyderabad Toofans for 68 lakh. The Netherlands' Jip Janssen also made headlines, being bought by Tamil Nadu Dragons for 54 lakh.
In addition to the top picks, notable purchases included Amit Rohidas and Jugraj Singh, both fetching 48 lakh each from Tamil Nadu Dragons and Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers respectively. Sumit and Araijeet Singh Hundal were other significant buys, going to Hyderabad Toofans and Team Gonasika for 46 lakh and 42 lakh, respectively. The auction also saw a high interest in goalkeepers from abroad, with Ireland's David Harte, Germany's Jean-Paul Danneberg, and the Netherlands' Pirmin Blaak attracting bids from Tamil Nadu Dragons, Hyderabad Toofans, and Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers.
The day's transactions shifted the financial landscape for the franchises, leaving them with varying purse sizes for future buys. Hyderabad Toofans and UP Rudras were left with substantial amounts, having 204.00 lakh and 206.00 lakh respectively, while Soorma Hockey Club and Team Gonasika had 162.00 lakh and 161.00 lakh. Kalinga Lancers emerged with the largest purse remaining at 257.00 lakh, indicating strategic spending and suggesting a competitive edge in upcoming auction rounds.
