By MyKhel Staff

In a high-stakes clash at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Tamil Nadu Dragons secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the Shrachi Bengal Tigers to leapfrog them at the top of the Hockey India League standings.

The win, powered by goals from Karthi Selvam and Uttam Singh, marked another milestone in the Dragons' impressive campaign.

The match opened with a defensive chess game as both teams struggled to break through in the first quarter. Tamil Nadu Dragons had the better chances toward the end of the quarter, with Jamie Carr making a crucial save from Blake Govers' penalty corner attempt. The breakthrough came seconds into the second quarter when Karthi Selvam converted a deft aerial pass from Uttam Singh, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead and notching his second goal of the season.

The Bengal Tigers responded with aggressive intent, creating a series of chances. Jugraj Singh's drag flick was deflected onto the crossbar by David Harte, who also denied Affan Yousuf and Sean Findlay with spectacular saves. Despite relentless pressure, Tamil Nadu's defense held firm.

The Tigers finally broke through in the 35th minute when Rupinder Pal Singh converted a penalty stroke, leveling the score at 1-1. Moments later, Tim Cross nearly put Bengal ahead, but his shot ricocheted off the woodwork. Against the run of play, the Dragons restored their lead in the 37th minute. A precision pass from Mortiz Ludwig set up Uttam Singh, who calmly slotted home to make it 2-1.

The Tigers squandered several opportunities to equalize, including three penalty corners in the 39th minute and a second penalty stroke in the 44th minute, which Rupinder dragged wide. The Dragons faced further challenges when they were reduced to nine players after yellow cards for Mortiz Ludwig and Chandan Yadav late in the game. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Tamil Nadu's defense remained resolute.

The victory not only extended the Dragons' winning streak but also dethroned the Bengal Tigers from the top of the standings. With this win, Tamil Nadu Dragons reaffirm their championship aspirations and leave their rivals in pursuit of redemption.

As the Hockey India League heats up, all eyes will be on these two formidable sides as the competition enters a decisive phase.
