India Hockey World Cup 2026: What India need to beat Argentina and qualify

India's hopes of reaching the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 semi-finals have been reduced to a complicated equation after their defeat to the Netherlands, with a big win over Argentina and a favourable result in the other Pool E match now required.

India suffered a 3-1 defeat against the Netherlands in their opening second-round match, leaving them without a point from two matches in the pool. However, Argentina's 3-1 win over England kept India's qualification hopes mathematically alive.

The Netherlands have already secured their place in the semi-finals with six points, while England and Argentina sit on three points each. India are fourth with no points and a goal difference of -4.

What India need to reach the semi-finals

India must beat Argentina in their final Pool E match on Monday and will then have to rely on the Netherlands defeating England in the other fixture.

The margin of India's victory will be crucial because goal difference could determine the second semi-finalist if India, Argentina and England finish level on three points.

A three-goal victory over Argentina would leave India on three points with a goal difference of -1. In that scenario, England would need to lose to the Netherlands by at least two goals for India to move above both teams.

India would have a more straightforward route with a four-goal victory over Argentina. In that case, any defeat for England against the Netherlands would be enough to send India into the semi-finals.

However, an England draw against the Netherlands would end India's hopes, regardless of the result against Argentina.

India need to find their scoring touch

India's biggest challenge will be converting their chances into goals.

Harmanpreet Singh has been one of the tournament's leading scorers with six goals, but India's forwards have struggled to provide consistent returns. Abhishek has scored twice, while Dilpreet Singh has one goal, making them the only Indian forwards to have found the target so far.

India created opportunities against the Netherlands but were unable to make them count, while the Dutch capitalised on their chances after half-time.

That finishing problem will be particularly important against Argentina, who have already shown their attacking threat with a 3-1 win over England.

Argentina have also beaten India twice in the FIH Pro League this year, winning 8-0 and 4-2 in Rourkela.

Netherlands result could decide India's fate

The Netherlands face England in the other Pool E match later on Monday, with the Dutch already assured of a semi-final berth.

For India, however, the result could be decisive.

If England beat or draw with the Netherlands, India will be eliminated even if they defeat Argentina. A Netherlands victory would keep India's hopes alive, with the required margin depending on India's result.

India therefore have little room for error. They must first produce a convincing victory against Argentina before waiting for the Dutch to complete the second half of the equation.

"We have a lifeline to stay in the fight to reach the semi-finals. It is quite clear what we have to do," India coach Craig Fulton said. "We need the goals but at the same time we still need to manage our own game and maintain our structure."

India vs Argentina: What next?

India's immediate objective is straightforward despite the complicated permutations: beat Argentina by as many goals as possible.

The forwards will need to be more clinical, while Harmanpreet's penalty-corner threat will again be central to India's attacking plans. Argentina goalkeeper Tomas Santiago has already identified the Indian captain as the team's biggest threat.

With the Netherlands-England match taking place after India's fixture, India could finish their match knowing exactly what they need from the Dutch.

For a team that started the second round with its semi-final hopes firmly in its own hands, the equation has now become considerably more difficult. But India still have one route into the last four - win big, then hope the Netherlands deliver.
