Hockey World Cup: India’s Semifinal Hopes Hang by a Thread After 1-3 Loss to Netherlands

Amstelveen, Aug 22: India's hopes of reaching the semifinals of the FIH Hockey World Cup suffered a major blow as the Harmanpreet Singh-led side went down 1-3 to reigning Olympic champions Netherlands in their second-round clash on Saturday.

India produced a disciplined and composed performance for three quarters, keeping the Netherlands scoreless for the first 40 minutes. However, a difficult final quarter saw the Dutch score three times, with India unable to build on Harmanpreet's penalty-corner goal.

The defeat leaves India needing a five-goal win over Argentina in their final second-round match on Monday, while also requiring the Netherlands to beat England, if they are to finish second in Pool E and reach the semifinals.

The Netherlands have already secured their place in the last four with six points, while Argentina and England have three points each. India remain without a point in the second round after defeats to England and the Netherlands.

India have also never defeated the Netherlands in World Cup history. The Dutch famously beat India in the 1973 World Cup final on penalties.

India keep Netherlands at bay in first half

India started the contest with purpose and showed exactly why they had to be taken seriously despite their difficult position in the pool.

The Indian defence was particularly impressive in the opening quarter, denying the Netherlands time and space in the attacking third while also disrupting their midfield possession.

India created pressure in the third minute when they entered the circle from the right, but the Dutch defence managed to clear the danger.

Rajinder Singh then entered the circle in the eighth minute after receiving a pass from Hardik Singh, but India again could not find the final touch.

The Netherlands earned their first penalty corner in the 13th minute, but Jip Janssen's drag flick was blocked by Manpreet Singh, who rushed out smartly to deny the opportunity.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern. The Netherlands earned three consecutive penalty corners in the opening minute, but India survived the danger without conceding.

India had perhaps their best opportunity of the first half in the 24th minute when Dilpreet Singh collected a pass from Manpreet and entered the circle. Dutch goalkeeper Derk Meijer denied his attempt, while Rajinder was unable to make the most of the rebound.

Neither side could break the deadlock before half-time.

Netherlands finally find a way through

India's defensive resilience continued into the third quarter, but the Netherlands eventually punished a lapse in concentration.

India earned their first penalty corner in the 35th minute following a referral. Harmanpreet's drag flick hit the foot of the first Dutch rusher, giving India another penalty corner.

The skipper's second attempt, however, went wide. The breakthrough came soon after, and it was a frustrating one for India.

Tijmen Reyenga received the ball inside the circle before his effort took a deflection off Duco Telgenkamp's stick and found the net.

Indian goalkeeper Mohit had little chance of stopping the deflected effort.

India immediately tried to respond, earning a penalty corner on the counter, but Harmanpreet's drag flick was saved by the Dutch goalkeeper.

Netherlands pull away in final quarter

India pushed for an equaliser but struggled to convert their opportunities.

In the 47th minute, Abhishek earned another penalty corner. With Harmanpreet off the pitch, Amit Rohidas took the attempt, but his slap shot deflected wide.

India reviewed another incident after the ball struck a Dutch defender's foot and were awarded another penalty corner. Sanjay's effort, however, was blocked by the goalkeeper.

The Netherlands then doubled their advantage in the 51st minute through TJep Hoedemakers.

India responded almost immediately.

Rajinder earned a penalty corner on a counter attack in the 52nd minute, and Harmanpreet returned to the pitch to take responsibility. The captain produced a powerful drag flick to finally beat the Dutch goalkeeper and bring India back into the contest. At 1-2, India had a glimmer of hope.

But the comeback lasted only a few minutes.

India conceded possession in a dangerous area when Manpreet Singh lost the ball, allowing Thijs van Dam to break forward. The Dutch forward made no mistake, restoring the Netherlands' two-goal advantage in the 55th minute.

India could not find another response before the final hooter.

The 1-3 defeat means India now face a huge task against Argentina. Even a victory will not be enough unless it comes by at least five goals, while the Netherlands must also defeat England.

After a strong first half and a disciplined defensive display for much of the contest, India's hopes of making the semifinals have now been reduced to a combination of a big win and a favourable result elsewhere.
