The Indian men's hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss in the first match of a two-match series against world champions Germany at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi. Henrik Mertgens (4') and Lukas Windfeder (30') were on target for Germany, while India's captain Harmanpreet Singh missed a crucial penalty stroke in the 27th minute.
Indian men's hockey team head coach Craig Fulton was reflective after the game, especially on the absence of vice-captain Hardik Singh in midfield. "In the first 4-5 minutes, we had some good play, then we made one mistake, and they scored. We had a chance to level from the penalty stroke, but it didn't happen for us," Fulton stated.

The 49-year-old, Fulton emphasized the impact of Hardik's absence, "You look at what Hardik can bring - his speed, his ability to break through the zone, and his aerials. We missed that spark today. There wasn't much fire up front."
Discussing the match's flow, he admitted, "The first half was theirs, but the second quarter was ours, in a sense. We missed a few connections up front, we weren't fluid. Normally, we have more goal shots, but we've got another opportunity on Thursday."
Looking ahead, the former Belgium assistant coach is hopeful for a better performance in the next match, with the team working on the areas where they fell short.
This was the fourth encounter between India and Germany this year. Germany secured a 3-2 victory over India in the Paris 2024 Olympic semi-finals, while India triumphed in the FIH Pro League with 3-0 and 3-2 wins.
The second match of the India vs. Germany hockey series is scheduled for Thursday at the same venue.
