Bhubaneswar, Feb 19: India secured a narrow victory over Germany in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 (Men), winning 1-0 on Wednesday (February 19). This win at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium marked India's second triumph of the season.
The sole goal of the game, securing India's climb to the seventh position in the standings, came from Gurjant Singh. This victory was particularly significant as it followed a heavy 4-1 defeat to the same opponents the day before, showcasing a strong comeback from the Indian team.

The match was characterized by intense competition, with both teams showcasing their defensive and offensive skills. India, led by Captain Harmanpreet Singh, displayed a formidable defense that played a crucial role in the victory. The game's decisive moment came early on, four minutes into the match, when Gurjant Singh managed to score, marking his second consecutive goal in back-to-back matches. This early lead set the tone for the rest of the match, with India employing a half-court press strategy to protect their advantage while remaining vigilant for opportunities to capitalize on German errors.
Throughout the match, Germany pressed hard for an equalizer. Notably, Thies Prinz nearly leveled the score with his impressive skills, but Indian goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak's timely intervention kept India in the lead.
As the game progressed, India's strategy involved sitting deeper in their half, compelling Germany to find creative ways to breach the Indian defence. Although Germany increased their intensity in the third quarter, India's defence, along with crucial saves from Pathak and his replacement Suraj Karkera, kept the World Champions at bay.
The final minutes of the game saw Germany intensify their efforts for a late equaliser, removing their goalkeeper Alexander Stadler for an extra outfield player. Despite winning four penalty corners in quick succession, Germany was unable to break through India's steadfast defence.
A key moment came when India successfully used a review to overturn a penalty corner awarded to Germany, demonstrating the tactical acumen of the Indian team.
