India's men's hockey team suffered a 4-2 defeat against Australia in the second match of their five-game series in Perth on Sunday (April 7).
A record of 2-4 is preferable to 1-5, yet India's performance was disappointing on both offence and defence. After a 5-1 loss in the opening match on Saturday, the coach Craig Fulton's boys now trail the series 2-0.

Jugraj Singh (9') and Harmanpreet Singh (30') scored goals for India, and Jeremy Hayward (6',34'), Jacob Anderson (42'), and Nathan Ephraums (45') scored for the home team.
The game started slowly with both teams being cautious. But Australia, ranked fourth in the world, scored the first goal against India, who are ranked just below them. After five minutes of play, Australia earned the initial penalty corner of the game. Jeremy Hayward seized the opportunity, driving a powerful low drag-flick past Indian goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak to give his team the advantage.
After a few minutes, India responded with a goal, drawing level from a penalty corner courtesy of a belter by Jugraj Singh, marking his 15th international goal. During the second quarter, both teams displayed strong offensive plays, while their defences faced challenges from the opposing side's attacks.
Just before halftime, the home team faltered when Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh successfully converted a penalty corner, marking his 180th international goal and giving the Indian men’s hockey team a 2-1 lead as they headed into the break.
The advantage of the Indian team was short-lived, as Jeremy Hayward, who scored 9 goals at the FIH Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup 2023, netted his second penalty corner goal four minutes into the second half. The quarter was dominated by the Australians, who expanded their lead with goals from Jacob Anderson and Nathan Ephraums.
Australia was winning 4-2. India tried really hard in the last quarter to save the match, but Australia played very well and only let India have one chance to score. Unfortunately, India couldn't score, and they lost their second game of the tour.
The Indian men's hockey team will play against Australia for the third game in the same place on Wednesday, April 10. With the series slipping from their grasp, India faces a crucial juncture as they gear up for the third match against Australia, aiming to reverse their fortunes and reignite their campaign.
