India vs Great Britain Hockey: Resilient India defy odds to advance to Semis, Britain knocked out
The Indian hockey team scripted a stellar win as they beat Great Britain in the quarterfinal of the Olympics 2024 on Sunday (August 4).
The Men in Blue won 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 score in normal time. Harmanpreet Singh and his team showed an excellent defensive display along with PR Sreejesh's heroics in the tiebreaker and during the normal time.

India faced a setback when Amit Rohidas was sent off for an intentional stick foul. Despite this, captain Harmanpreet Singh brought India back into the game with brilliant drag flick, giving them the lead in the second quarter. However, Lee Morton quickly equalised for Great Britain before halftime.
India's Defence and Sreejesh's Heroics
In the second half, Great Britain created several opportunities but couldn't find the net. India's goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was exceptional, making numerous saves to keep the score level. The Indian defence stood firm, taking the match to a penalty shootout.
During the penalty shootout, Sreejesh continued his stellar performance. Although Britain scored their first two penalties, Williamson missed one, and Phil Roper's shot was brilliantly saved by Sreejesh. This put India on the brink of a quarterfinal victory.
Rajkumar Pal Secures Semi-Final Spot
Rajkumar Pal stepped up for India's fourth penalty and converted it into a goal. This crucial shot ensured India's progression to the semi-finals of the 2024 Olympics.

Despite being down to ten men, they managed to hold off Great Britain's attacks and secure a place in the semi-finals through a tense penalty shootout. Sreejesh's performance was pivotal in this victory. His saves during regular play and the shootout were instrumental in keeping India in contention and eventually winning the match.
The win depicted India's strong defensive capabilities and their ability to perform under pressure. It also sets them up as serious contenders for an Olympic medal as they look to replicate or better their Tokyo performance.
