India vs Australia: Not an ideal start for Harmanpreet Singh and Co. in Perth

Perth, Apr 6: Indian Hockey Head Coach Craig Fulton spoke a lot about starting strong against a strong side like Australia, but it didn't happen today. The Indian Men’s Hockey Team went down 1-5 against Australia in their opening game of the five-match Test series in Perth.

Tim Brand (3’), Tom Wickham (20’, 38’), Joel Rintala (37’), and Flynn Ogilvie (57’) were the goalscorers for the hosts, while Gurjant Singh (47’) netted a solitary goal for India.

Throughout the game, the Australians controlled the tempo from start to finish. Although the Indian team displayed some promise in the final quarter, it proved to be too little, too late.

During the FIH Pro League, India displayed a promising performance against the Kookaburras. Despite expectations of a close match based on their previous encounters in the league, India conceded an early goal.

This setback, though typically not significant in modern hockey, foreshadowed a challenging remainder of the game, as Australia managed to secure four more goals, leading to a convincing 5-1 score going into Sunday’s second test match.

Australia has consistently been a nightmare for India, whether it be the Cricket World Cup 2023 where they thrashed India in the final by 6 wickets, the Hockey match in the Tokyo Olympics where the Kookaburras demolished India 7-1, or even the Commonwealth Games 2022 where Australia defeated India 7-0.

As the curtain falls on today's match, the Indian team shifts their focus to the future, channelling their energies into preparation for the next showdown against Australia, where they aim to rewrite the narrative of their rivalry. The Indian Men's Hockey Team is set to face Australia in their second match of the tour on April 7th, 2024.
