Indian Women's Hockey Team Faces Heartbreaking Defeat Against Great Britain in FIH Pro League

By MyKhel Staff

London, Jun 9: The Indian women's hockey team experienced another narrow defeat in the FIH Pro League, losing 2-3 to Great Britain on Sunday (June 9), extending their losing streak to eight matches.

Despite showing a strong performance throughout most of the match, India succumbed to a late rally by the home team, ending their Pro League season on a disappointing note.

India, displaying determination and improved play, fought hard against Great Britain. Watson Charlotte initiated the scoring for the hosts with an early goal in the third minute. India responded when Lalremsiami netted a field goal in the 14th minute, leveling the score. Navneet Kaur then put India ahead with a goal in the 23rd minute, raising hopes for a much-needed victory.

However, the match took a decisive turn in the closing minutes. Grace Baldson of Great Britain, a name that has previously dashed Indian hopes, once again proved to be the nemesis. Baldson's quick-fire brace in the 56th and 58th minutes shattered India's lead. Her winning goal, a powerful drag flick, found the bottom corner of the net, leaving India devastated.

Adding to the team's frustration were two contentious calls, including a critical video review decision that went against India. The narrow loss left coach Harendra Singh visibly frustrated, especially as this match represented India's best opportunity to secure their first victory under his leadership.

Reflecting on the match, Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia expressed her disappointment: "These are not the results we want. We are upset about today's result. We came back from a goal down and needed to be calm in the end." She acknowledged the team's improved offensive strategy, a shift from the defensive approach they adopted in their earlier matches in Belgium. However, Punia also emphasized the need for better defensive performances moving forward.

Punia underscored the importance of India's continued participation in the Pro League: "It means a lot to Indian hockey that we keep our place in the Pro League because otherwise we don't get enough matches. Not happy with performances, but happy that we remain in the Pro League."

The match against Great Britain marks another chapter in the ongoing challenges faced by the Indian women's hockey team. Despite the setbacks, the team's resilience and commitment to improving their game remain evident. As they look forward to future competitions, the lessons learned from this season will undoubtedly be crucial in their quest for success on the international stage.
