India's Women's Hockey Team Misses Paris 2024 Olympics After Japan Defeat

By MyKhel Team

The aspirations of the Indian women's hockey team to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics were dashed on Friday, suffering a heart-wrenching 0-1 defeat to Japan in the bronze medal match of the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024.

This marked the first time since 2016 that the Indian women's hockey team failed to qualify for the Olympics. The top three teams from the eight-nation competition secure a spot in the Summer Games, with Germany and the United States already securing their positions by reaching the final.

In the intense battle, Japan's Kana Urata scored the decisive goal in the sixth minute, putting India on the back foot. Despite India's attempts to mount a more aggressive attack, both Deepika and Lalremsiami missed crucial opportunities, allowing Japan to maintain their lead.

Japan had additional chances to widen the gap, but goalkeeper Savita and the Indian defense made critical saves.

As the game progressed, India increased the pressure, nearly equalizing with a penalty corner in the third quarter. A powerful shot by Deepika seemed destined for the goal, but Japan's goalie, Eika Nakamura, deflected it onto the crossbar.

Ishika Chaudhary made a remarkable save off the line to prevent Japan from scoring on another penalty corner. Despite winning several penalty corners in the closing minutes of the quarter, India was thwarted by Japan's outstanding defense.

In the last quarter, the Indian women's hockey team launched a relentless offensive, realizing that their Olympic qualification hung in the balance. However, Japan's robust defense held firm, securing their narrow lead and Olympic spot.

The defeat marked a significant setback for the Indian team, ending their Olympic journey for Paris 2024.

The match showcased Japan's defensive prowess and the resilience of their goalkeeper, denying India the opportunity to secure a spot in the upcoming Olympics.

The disappointment for the Indian women's hockey team highlighted the challenges and intensity of international competition, as they fell short of their Olympic aspirations in a closely contested battle against Japan.
