Jalandhar School lift Nehru Junior Hockey trophy

New Delhi, Nov 14 (UNI) Three-goal blitz in the last stages of the game enabled Govt Model School Jalandhar outclassed SGPS Academy, Sri Bhaini Sahib, Ludhiana 4-2 to win the 36th Nehru Junior Hockey tournament here today.

The last day of the tournament turned out to be an all Punjab affair as Lyallpur Khalsa School, Jalandhar downded last year's champion GHP School, Shahdara (Delhi) 2-1 to claim the third positon.

Model School, Jalandhar, who had upset GHP School in the semi-final yesterday, continued with their giant killing spree as they overwhelmed the Ludhiana School especially in the second session after leading 1-0 at the breather.

Sukhdeep Singh and Navnesh Kumar scored two-goal each for the title winners, while Basant Singh and Saudagar Singh chipped in a goal each for the losers.

It was only in the 30th minute that Model School surged ahead when Sukhdeep Singh scored off a penalty corner. However, Ludhiana boys came back strongly to draw parity through Basant Singh in the 48th minute.

Ludhiana then took the lead two minutres later through Saudagar Singh who converted a penalty corner(1-2).

The lead lasted barely seven minutes as Jalandhar boys launched a sustained counter attack and forced a penalty corner which was converted by Navnesh Kumar(2-2).

A minute later another penalty corner and another goal followed.

Navnesh Kumar was right on the target for the second time to give his side 3-2 edge.

Two minutes before the final whistle Sukhdeep Singh captalised on a defensive lapse to shot home and complete the tally.

The winners earned a cheque of Rs 96,000, while the runners up received Rs 64,000.

Earlier, Lyallpur School had to wage a grim battle to overcome GHP School for the third place.

The winners scored two goals in the first half through Simranjit Singh (15th), and Rajneesh Kumar (33rd), while the Delhi School reduced the margin in the 42nd minute through Mahendra Oram.

The third place winners earned a cheque of Rs 32,000 for their efforts. Govt School Gurgaon was given PEPSI Penalty Corner Award that carried a cheque of Rs 20,000.
