Non-payment: Hockey players boycott World Cup camp

Pune, Jan 8: Protesting against the non-payment of their dues, the Indian Hockey team has decided to boycott ongoing World Cup preparatory camp for in indefinite period.

“We have decided to boycott the camp indefinitely till we are paid our money. We took such a decision in a meeting of players last night," Captain Rajpal Singh said.

The governing body, Hockey India (HI) reportedly did not respond to two letters written by the players demanding the payment of dues, prompting the team to start this unprecedented coup.

“Earlier we used to be paid after every tournament but it is not the case now. We had reminded the HI officials a few times, but nothing has been done. We will now report to the camp only after we are paid," the captain added.

This comes ahead of the crucial World Cup in New Delhi, which is scheduled to be held between Feb 28 to Mar 13.

Confident that the issue can be sorted out, Hockey India has called for a meeting with the senior players in New Delhi on Saturday, Jan 9.

The disturbing development brings to light the plight of the players of the national sport in the cricket-crazy country.
