Olympics 2024: A Closer Look at India Men’s Hockey Team’s Opponent Argentina

By Triyasha Chatterjee

After their narrow 3-2 win over New Zealand, the Indian Men's Hockey team are gearing up to take on Argentina in their second pool B match at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Monday (July 29).

The Indians, who have recently had a good record against Argentina, will be hoping for a second win to boost their place in an incredibly competitive pool. Ahead of the game let us take a detailed look at India's opponents.

Argentina

The Argentina men's hockey team, known as "Los Leones" (The Lions), has established itself as a formidable force in international field hockey. Mariano Ronconi is the current coach, having replaced Germán Orozco in 2020.

Argentina has participated in every Hockey World Cup from the inaugural edition in 1973, with the exception of the 1998 tournament. They earned the bronze medal in 2014, their highest finish in the competition. They also won a bronze medal in the 2008 Hockey Champions Trophy and a silver medal in the 2016-17 Hockey World League.

At the continental level, Argentina is the most successful team in the Americas, having won the majority of competitions, including four Pan American Cup gold medals and eleven Pan American Games gold medals.

The team made its Olympic debut in the 1948 London Games and has since been a regular participant in the event. Their most significant achievement came at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where they won their first-ever Olympic gold medal by defeating Belgium 4-2 in the final. This victory was a milestone for Argentine hockey, highlighting their rise in the sport.

Argentina's journey in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was marked by mixed results. Placed in Pool A, they faced tough competition from teams like Australia, India, and Spain. They began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Spain, followed by a 2-1 victory over Japan.

However, they faced a challenging match against the top-ranked Australian team, losing 5-2. Despite their efforts, Argentina was eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 3-1 defeat to Germany.

As of the latest rankings, the Argentina men's hockey team is positioned seventh among the top teams globally, showcasing their consistent performance and competitiveness.

In November 2015, Argentina reached a remarkable fifth place in the FIH World Rankings, only to be overtaken after their Olympic gold medal by reaching 1st place in April 2017.

In recent years, Argentina has continued to demonstrate their prowess in the sport. They secured their qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics by winning the gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago.

In the final, they defeated Chile 3-1, securing their 11th gold medal at the Pan American Games and solidifying their place in the upcoming Olympics. The team's success can be attributed to a combination of skilled players, effective coaching, and a strong hockey culture in Argentina.

Players like Gonzalo Peillat, who was the top scorer at the 2016 Olympics, and Tomas Domene, who excelled at the 2023 Pan American Games, have been instrumental in the team's achievements.

Argentina Men's hockey team did not make a great start to the Paris Olympics 2024. They were held to a 1-0 loss to Australia in the opening fixture. Blake Govers (30') scored the only goal in the game from a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the second quarter to stage the win for the Kookaburras.
