India go down to New Zealand in hockey

London, Aug 1: India lost their second straight match as they went down to New Zealand 1-3 in men's hockey at the London Olympics 2012 here at the Riverbank Arena on Wednesday.

This was second successive loss for India in Group B. They lost 2-3 to The Netherlands in the first match. India's next match is on August 3, Friday, against Germany. South Korea and Belgium are the other teams in the group of six.

The top two teams from each group progress to semi-finals.

From 1-0 ahead in the second minute, India failed to find a goal for the rest of 68 minutes. All goals were scored in the first half. India had 10 shots on goal but only one was successful. In Black Sticks' 13 shots, three sounded the boards.

India started off with a bang as Sandeep Singh struck in the second minute via a penalty corner. But the initial lead vanished soon as the Black Sticks came back charging. He found the target thrice before the close of first 35 minutes.

Andrew Hayward converted a penalty corner in the 13th minute as New Zealand drew level. In the 24th minute, New Zealand were awarded a penalty stroke which Phillip Burrows succeeded in scoring. Nicholas Wilson sounded the boards in the 25th minute to make it a dominant first half for Black Sticks.

After losing their opening group game to The Netherlands, India will be looking to win this at the Riverbank Arena.

India were trailing 0-2 against Netherlands but equalised and later went down 3-2.

New Zealand lost to South Korea 0-2 in their first match.

Multiple Olympic champions India are in Group B. South Korea, Belgium and Germany are the other three teams along with India, New Zealand and The Netherlands.
