Pakistan and China head into the match as the two bottom-placed teams, having only been able to draw or lose their matches. Fifth-placed Pakistan has drawn two and lost one, while sixth-placed China has drawn one and lost two.

In their most recent outing at the Asian Champions Trophy 2023, Pakistan drew 3-3 with Japan, and China drew 1-1 with South Korea. Both the matches took place on Sunday (August 6).
Pakistan opened their campaign with a 1-3 loss to Malaysia and followed that with a 1-1 draw against South Korea befpre drawing with Japan. They still need to play China and India in the round-robin stage.
China, on the other hand, suffered a 2-7 thrashing at the hands of the hosts India and followed that with a 1-5 loss to Malaysia before the 1 all draw against South Korea. The Chinese team has to still play Pakistan and Japan in the group stage.
China and Pakistan will now face each other for the seventh time in their history. In the previous six meetings, Pakistan has been victorious all the six times, scoring 13 goals and conceding 5 goals across those games.
