Paris, Aug 2: In a thrilling encounter at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Indian men's hockey team achieved a historic victory by defeating Australia 3-2, marking their first win over the formidable Kookaburras at the Olympic Games since 1972.
This triumph secured India the second spot in Pool B and underscored their readiness for the challenges ahead. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh, who scored twice, played a pivotal role in this significant win against the Tokyo Games silver medallists.

Despite already securing a quarterfinal berth before Friday's match, the Indian team displayed exceptional skill and determination, delivering a power-packed performance from the onset.
The match saw Abhishek scoring in the 12th minute, followed by Harmanpreet's goals in the 13th and 33rd minutes. Australia's Tom Craig and Blake Govers scored in the 25th and 55th minutes respectively, but it wasn't enough to overcome the spirited Indian side.
Abhishek, who netted the opening goal, reflected on the magnitude of this victory during his conversation with JioCinema. "This is a massive moment. We've lost our last seven matches to Australia. This will give us confidence for the quarterfinal, so this was an important win."
Captain Harmanpreet Singh, while acknowledging the importance of the win, emphasized the need to remain focused on the upcoming challenges. "Every win matters. Sometimes the result is in your favour, sometimes it isn't. What you learn from the failures is what matters.
"As a team, we showed that if Australia is one of the best teams, we are also working hard to analyze and beat them. If we continue playing like this, we can beat anyone. Beating Australia isn't the achievement; we're still competing, and we know that the quarterfinals will be challenging."
Speaking specifically about the quarterfinals, Harmanpreet added, "For the next game, we will need to double our efforts. We know that we can't lose our focus for even a second. Our mentality is to give our 100%. We'll find out who we'll face next soon and spend whatever time is left to analyze them."
Harmanpreet also praised Abhishek's contributions, highlighting his potential and impact on the team. "We all believe that Abhishek is one of the best players in our team and is very talented. Whenever you score, your confidence goes up. I told you yesterday as well that it's a good sign he's scoring and helping the team lead."
Coach Craig Fulton spoke about the importance of momentum gained from this game. "You can go 2-0 down in two minutes, it's all about how you respond. You never win the game in the first quarter, you need to finish strong and today, we finished strong."
Fulton also commented on the team's strikers, praising their composure and natural attacking instincts. "They are just calm and doing what they naturally do. They have an attacking DNA and it's great to watch, nice hockey!"
