Resurgent India beat NZ in hockey, go to table top

Melbourne, Dec 2: A resurgent India beat New Zealand 4-2 in the Champions Trophy hockey tournament here on Sunday to move to the top of Pool A with six points. It was India's second successive victory in the tournament. India had defeated England 3-1 in their opening game on Saturday.

It has been a dramatic turnaround for India in world hockey after the shocking performance at the Olympics this year where they finished last among 12 teams in the fray.

On Sunday, India recovered from conceding an early self-goal against the Black Sticks. Akashdeep Singh (10th minute), Gurwinder Singh Chandi (14th minute), VR Raghunath (25th minute) and Danish Mujtaba (65th minute) scored for the team. For the Kiwis, Nicholas Wilson scored at the 37th minute.

In another game, England scripted a surprise 4-1 win over the Olympic champions Germany. India will take on Germany on Tuesday.

India had lost 1-3 to New Zealand and 2-5 to Germany in the Olympic earlier this year.
